About the role
The Animal Services Bureau has an opening for a regular part-time (0.5 FTE) Registered Veterinary Technician at Hitchcock Road Animal Services (HRAS) in Salinas. This part-time position with a flexible schedule will assist with spay/neuter surgeries (that may include shelter pets, feral cats, or owned pets), vaccination clinics, and assisting with shelter medical rounds as needed for animals housed within the shelter.
Responsibilities
- Assists veterinarian with examinations; restrains animals during examinations; makes observations on the health of sheltered animals and reports to shelter supervisor and veterinarian;
- Communicates medical information to staff, volunteers, and clients;
- Schedules animals for spay or neuter surgery;
- Obtains cost estimates for outside treatment.
Requirements
- Thorough Knowledge Of State and local ordinances and laws relating to the care, treatment and control of animals.
- Methods, techniques, and medication used in the care and treatment of animals.
- Physical and behavioral characteristics of common domestic animals and livestock.
- Characteristics of common diseases.
- Spay and neuter surgical procedures and techniques.
- Proper techniques for preparation, handling and disposal of rabies specimen test samples.
- Proper euthanasia procedures.
- Basic animal care and nutritional needs.
- Procedures and medical terminology of a veterinary clinic.
- Standard office computer software.
- English grammar and usage.
Qualifications
- Ability to speak, read, and write effectively in English and Spanish.
Skills and Abilities
- Handle animals properly and perform work in a humane manner.
- Perform euthanasia of animals by injection; recognize symptoms of rabies and other common diseases and injuries in animals.
- Keep accurate records of treatment.
- Exercise independent judgment.
- Communicate clearly and proficiently both orally and in writing at a level necessary to perform the responsibilities and duties of the position.
- Maintain effective working relationships with shelter staff, volunteers, clients, and veterinarian.
Desirable Qualifications
- Ability to speak, read, and write effectively in English and Spanish.
Examples of Experience/Education/Training
Any combination of training, education and/or experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities and required conditions of employment is qualifying.
Conditions of Employment
- Successfully complete a background check to include fingerprinting.
- Possess and maintain a valid California Class C driver’s license or the ability to provide suitable transportation that is approved by the appointing authority.
- Be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during times of disaster and/or emergency.
