About the role
Provides respiratory therapy to patients as ordered by physicians. Works on complex cases, trains and mentors staff, and performs all types of respiratory care including diagnostic testing, treadmills, complete PFTs, ABG machine maintenance, hemodynamics, special procedures, and ENGs. Performs procedures required in specialty areas such as ICU and PACU. Assesses and treats newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Precepts students and orientees.
Responsibilities
- Plans and organizes workload, monitors assignments, reschedules, and coordinates workflow with staff.
- Assists in maintaining staff competencies and training; trains and mentors therapists.
- Regularly participates in department decision-making, staff meetings, and committee activities.
- Adjusts workload appropriately and carries out age-appropriate patient treatment needs.
- Administers all modes of routine respiratory care services (e.g., SVN, IPPB therapy, all O₂ therapies).
- Completes and documents patient care assessments and responses to therapy.
- Performs PFT testing, EKGs, stress testing, special procedures, and reports results accurately and timely.
- Assists with discharge planning, including setting up home care and participating in discharge meetings.
- Performs diagnostic tests such as simple spirometry, pulmonary function tests, and pulse oximetry.
- Other related job tasks or responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements
- Understanding of asepsis, infection control practices, and isolation protocols.
- Knowledge of volume ventilators and patient hemodynamics.
- Excellent customer service skills; computer skills preferred.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Education: Completion of a formal two-year respiratory education program meeting certification (CRT) and registration (RRT) requirements.
- Experience: Two years in respiratory care.
- Licensure/Certifications: Licensed Registered Respiratory Therapist in Arizona; CPR certification. ACLS, PALS, and NRP required within 12 months of employment.
Preferred Requirements:
- Experience in acute care, ICU, hemodynamics, PFT, and cardiology.
- Ability to precept and train staff, students, and orientees.
- Leadership skills to actively meet department needs.
