About the Role

The Registered Polysomnographer is responsible for understanding basic anatomy, neural anatomy, cardiac rhythms, sleep stages, and the bio-electrical patterns of EEG, EOG, EKG, and EMG signals. Under the supervision of the Lab Supervisor and Medical Director, the Polysomnographer evaluates overnight sleep studies, ensuring compliance with departmental policies, procedures, and hospital standards.

Responsibilities

  • Room patients, properly connect sensors, and monitor camera and equipment measuring data such as heart rate, brain waves, muscle activity, and body function.
  • Notate position changes, patient movement, stages of sleep, snoring, patterns, or anomalies in sleep.
  • Monitor pulse oximetry, PAP titration, and vital signs; score sleep stages and clinical events; provide supplemental low-flow oxygen and titration.
  • Collect, analyze, and integrate patient information to identify and meet patient-specific needs.
  • Document pertinent data in patient medical records for use by the Sleep Doctor in analysis, diagnosis, and treatment plan development.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of technique and treatment differences for patients of varying ages, including pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patients.
  • Properly remove sensors and educate patients on sleep health and next steps; provide additional education per the Sleep Doctor’s treatment plan.
  • Manage and operate equipment safely, inspecting and testing to ensure functionality; follow departmental cleaning procedures.
  • Treat patients and their support systems with respect and dignity; coordinate patient care to meet needs and hospital policy.
  • Maintain regular attendance and punctuality for scheduled shifts.
  • Adapt assessment, treatment, and care methods to accommodate physical, cultural, age-specific, and developmental needs.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge through continuing education, including internal and external programs.
  • Utilize assistive devices for lifting as mandated; adhere to safety protocols at all times.
  • Undergo respirator and fit testing for exposure to airborne infectious diseases, droplet-producing procedures, or caustic chemicals.
  • Implement DRH Standards of Behavior and exhibit core values.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Ability to assess patient needs and adapt to urgent situations.
  • Basic computer skills and proficiency with information technology relevant to the position.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Flexibility to adapt procedures, processes, tools, equipment, and techniques as required.
  • Ability to travel to various locations within the DRH system.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate of an AMA-approved school of Respiratory Care, Polysomnography Technician, Sleep Technology, or Sleep Medicine.
  • Certification by a nationally-recognized board (Registered Polysomnographic Technologist, RPSGT, or Board Registered Polysomnographic Sleep Technologist, BRPT).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; may have up to 30 days to obtain upon hire or transfer.
  • For positions requiring travel: a current valid driver’s license and automobile liability insurance.

This is a safety-sensitive position as defined by Oklahoma law. Applicants cannot test positive for Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in pre-employment or any subsequent drug tests, even with a valid medical marijuana card. Required vaccinations per DRH policy, with exemptions available upon request. Respirator and fit testing are mandatory for exposure risks.
