About the role
This position is part-time and benefits eligible. Hours per week are 0, with a schedule that varies.
Responsibilities
- Creates the initial electronic health record that serves as the foundation of the patient medical record.
- Prevents creation of duplicate medical records.
- Fulfills compliance with accrediting bodies' mandates to use identifiers for patient identification.
- Checks in and registers patients; obtains and verifies complete demographic, guarantor, and insurance information.
- Ensures accurate information at the point of registration to facilitate timely payment and prevent billing issues.
- Maintains confidentiality of patient personal/financial information and medical records.
- Understands and discusses financial information and obligations with patients.
- Schedules patient appointments, coordinates cancellations, and provides information about test preparations, patient arrival time, and medication guidelines.
- Provides accurate, detailed information to patients regarding insurance coverage and manages discussions for services that may not be covered by their health plan.
- Interacts with physicians and their staff to resolve issues related to patient care.
- Collects and manages payments, including cash payments, and follows security protocols related to cash handling.
- Communicates with patients and visitors, offering assistance and maintaining a welcoming environment.
- Monitors and works assigned electronic health record work queues, following department-approved processes.
- Answers telephone, screens calls, and takes messages.
- May arrange transportation needs, provide directions, locate wheelchairs, and coordinate interpreter services.
- Ensures compliance with HIPAA and other relevant regulations.
- Trains in and demonstrates knowledge of basic medical and insurance terms and abbreviations.
- Works independently, prioritizing tasks and handling interruptions in a high-stress environment.
- Uses computer systems and software, including insurance verification/eligibility tools, EPIC electronic medical record, patient liability estimation tools, and Microsoft Office.
- Communicates clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Manages sensitive and confidential information according to internal policies.
- Exhibits strong organizational skills and acts as a resource for other staff.

Licenses, registrations, and certifications are not required for this position.
The ideal candidate should have a high school diploma. Prior experience is not necessary.

Skills
- Basic computer skills, including insurance verification/eligibility tools, EPIC electronic medical record, patient liability estimation tools, electronic email, Microsoft Office, internet browser, and phone technology.
- Knowledge of basic medical and insurance terms and abbreviations.
- Understanding of health insurance types (Medicare, Medicaid, managed care, and commercial payers).
- Experience with insurance verification/eligibility tools, EPIC electronic medical record, patient liability estimation tools, electronic email, Microsoft Office, Internet, and phone technology is preferred.
