Responsibilities
- Provides expert, integrated, cost-effective quality patient care through the coordination of clinical care for high-risk patients with complex issues across the continuum of care settings.
- Integrates knowledge of advanced pathophysiology, human responses to health problems, and non-disease based etiologies to assess, plan, coordinate care, monitor, and evaluate patient outcomes.
- Supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family.
- Works collaboratively with other health care professionals, functioning in the roles of care provider, educator, and consultant in a variety of settings throughout the medical center.
- Functions within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, including accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating, and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients.
- Provides leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts.
- Possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and teaching; and participates on committees or projects.
- May work at multiple locations and practice settings.
The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice and the Scope and Standards for Wound, Ostomy and Continence Specialty Practice Nursing provide a basis for the practice of the WON.
Qualifications
- Graduate of a baccalaureate Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited nursing program.
- If graduation did not occur within the last two years, one year of RN experience in an applicable care setting or one year of current LPN experience at Mayo Clinic is required.
- Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nursing (CWOCN) Certification preferred.
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
- One year RN experience in an applicable care setting or one year of LPN experience at Mayo Clinic within the last five years preferred.
- BLS, Epic experience, and WOCN certified preferred.
- Computer skills required, prior experience with electronic medical record systems preferred.
- Experience working in a team environment.
- Ability to work flexible hours, which may include days, evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends and on-call.
- Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting.
- Demonstrated leadership, effective communicator, and excellent critical thinking skills.
- Current RN license by applicable state requirements.
- WON Certification within 24 months of employment in the position.
- Arizona – Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) competency.
- Additional state licensure(s) and/or specialty certification/training as required by the work area.
