Typical Work Activities
- Develops, implements and evaluates the nursing regimen for patients/residents on the nursing unit
- Observes, records, reports and interprets patients'/residents' responses to measures which restore, maintain or promote health and well being
- Transcribes and implements physicians' orders
- Conducts and/or participates in team conferences for planning and evaluating nursing care
- Provides nursing care to patients/residents who require their professional skill and judgment
- Identifies those components of nursing care which may be delegated to allied nursing personnel, and provides them with teaching and guidance
- Communicates and collaborates with members of the health care team and other departments
- Maintains an awareness of patient/resident status, recognizes and reports adverse signs, and takes authorized action relating to patient care
- Participates in discharge planning and provides related instruction and/or counseling to patients/residents and/or families and significant others consistent with the instructions of the responsible medical practitioner
- Provides for the education of patients/residents, families and significant others in preventive, curative and/or rehabilitative measures
- Participates in determining conditions, resources and policies essential to delivery of optimal quality nursing care
- Assumes responsibility and authority for the nursing unit in the absence of the Nurse Manager
- Maintains and supervises the keeping of accurate, current patient/residence records
- Assists with the orientation of new staff on the nursing unit
- Participates in departmental and interdisciplinary committees, as assigned
- Participates in defining, maintaining and interpreting standards of nursing practice

Minimum Qualifications
- New York State Active/Unencumbered License as a Registered Nurse
