Registered Nurse-Substance Abuse Residential Rehab Treatment Program

About the role

The Domiciliary RN for the Substance Abuse Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (SARRTP) provides patient-centered and recovery-oriented care and maintains self-awareness while caring for patients living with substance use disorder and/or mental health conditions. They will assist in directing the provision of nursing education - orientation - competencies and providing quality improvement and enhance outcomes utilization.

Responsibilities

• Utilizes interventions that maximize health capabilities (i.e. - safely administers medications - utilizes techniques for managing Veteran behavior - and provides appropriate activities to enhance the veteran's psycho-social and physical functioning)
• Applies principles of Mental Health / Substance Use Disorders/ Psychosocial Rehabilitation nursing in an interdisciplinary program
• Models person centered recovery interventions
• Affirms the Veteran's ability to participate in a Self-Medication Program (SMP) using criteria based on established local - VISN - and VHA policies
• Affirms the Veteran and the Veteran's family/support system's knowledge of medications and effects or side effects in order to meet the needs of the Veteran to perform self-medication
• Recognizes signs of intoxication and withdrawal - assesses suicidal ideation - provides crisis interventions - and completes appropriate assessments - documentation - and implements appropriate interventions
• Demonstrates the ability to assess - plan - intervene - evaluate - and document the process of the Veteran's substance use disorder into their recovery plan
• Identifies patterns of variance from the treatment plan and implements strategies for resolution
• Advocates on behalf of patients and families to facilitate optimum healthcare
• Actively involves the Veteran and Veteran's family/support systems in participation of Substance Use Disorder/ Mental Health Recovery plan
• Identifies and takes action to remove barriers that impede the Veteran/Veteran's family/support system to support the Veteran's recovery
• Establishes relationships with community resources/stakeholders that support Veterans and their families/support systems in their community
• Develops and conducts therapeutic and educational groups related to RRTP activities
• Actively participates in the development of policies and procedures related to the RRTP program
• Actively participates in RRTP screening processes as indicated
• Maintains therapeutic boundaries between staff and Veterans
• Delivers compassionate - quality care by ensuring interactions with all clinical disciplines are focused on establishing and maintaining healthy relationships
• Must be organized and responsive to Veteran needs - prioritizing appropriately
• Assists with CVT - VVC - or other technology delivery systems to ensure Veterans have access to care needs while following any procedures and documentation needs related to this service
• Administers medications - monitors for side effects - and documents follow-ups as outlined by policies and procedures
• Works closely in collaboration with members of the interdisciplinary team to positively influence patient outcomes

Requirements

• Basic Requirements: English Language Proficiency - Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)
• Exception: Candidates who otherwise meet the basic education requirements - but do not possess the required licensure - may be appointed at the entry step of the grade and level applicable to the completed nursing education as a GNT on a 120-day temporary appointment while actively pursuing licensure (may be extended up to two years on a case-by-case-basis.)
• Note: Grandfathering Provision - All persons currently employed in VHA in 0610 series and performing the duties as described in the qualification standard on the effective date of the standard (1/29/2024) are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the grade held including positive education and licensure/certification
