About the role
Helen Keller Services (HKS) is expanding its Children’s Learning Center to two new locations on Long Island. The School Nurse position will serve preschool children who are blind or have low vision, as well as those with multiple disabilities, autism, Down syndrome, or pervasive developmental delays.
Responsibilities
- Plan and conduct children’s learning center health assessments
- Evaluate the health needs of new and continuing students
- Assess families’ strengths and challenges during the initial intake process
- Represent the CLC with other social services agencies and medical facilities
- Understand and execute a formal case review of the student’s medical history
- Gain an understanding through formal in-person assessment of each child
- Work collaboratively with the School Social Worker and the Intake and Evaluation Coordinator
- Provide care and assistance to children with fragile health
- Locate resources for families, such as housing, medical insurance, Medicaid, and other appropriate social supports
- Manage treatments and medications prescribed by medical professionals
- Build a network with families, teachers, the School Social Worker, and other health professionals to support students with chronic and severe medical conditions
- Advise families about their children’s health during individual and group meetings and the school community on health-related topics
- Disseminate information related to OCFS/communicable diseases through ClassDoJo platform and email
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing and 2 years’ experience in a pediatric or school setting
- Strong technical skills including MS Office, Outlook, school-related applications
- RN registration certificate from New York State
Physical Demands
- Must be able to lift files and type for long durations
- Occasionally lift and/or move children up to 50 pounds safely
- Safely move children into and out of adaptive equipment, wheelchairs, and strollers
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
