Essential Duties

  • Aid the Director of Nursing Services in directing the day-to-day functions of the nursing activities.
  • Develop and maintain policies and procedures for the nursing service department.
  • Maintain up-to-date reference materials at nurses' stations.
  • Recommend written material to assist the nursing service department.
  • Maintain the Nursing Service Procedures Manual.
  • Maintain compliance with nursing service personnel.
  • Make written and oral reports to the Director as necessary.
  • Review department policies and procedures periodically.
  • Participate in facility surveys and inspections.
  • Review and update resident discharge plans.
  • Plan the nursing services portion of the resident's discharge plan.
  • Meet with nursing staff and support personnel to plan services.
  • Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as required.
  • Complete accident/incident reports as necessary.
  • Interpret departmental policies and procedures.
  • Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms.
  • Ensure compliance with privacy and security policies.
  • Report unauthorized attempts to access facility information.

Committee Functions

  • Attend various committee meetings as required.
  • Prepare written and/or oral reports of nursing service programs and activities.
  • Provide information to the Quality Assurance and Assessment Committee.
  • Implement recommendations from established committees.

Personnel Functions

  • Ensure sufficient nursing and support personnel are available.
  • Enroll nursing assistant trainees in approved programs.
  • Supervise nursing assistants and ensure they follow job descriptions.
  • Monitor and report on nursing staff performance.
  • Administer disciplinary actions fairly.
  • Report occupational exposures and fraud.
  • Ensure proper use of computer workstations.

Nursing Care Functions

  • Inform nursing service personnel of new admissions.
  • Greet newly admitted residents and escort them to their rooms.
  • Consult with residents, families, and physicians regarding care plans.
  • Notify physicians and next-of-kin of resident condition changes.
  • Review and evaluate residents' physical and emotional status.
  • Provide direct nursing care as necessary.
  • Administer medications and treatments according to orders.
  • Inspect treatment areas for cleanliness and safety.
  • Monitor seriously ill residents and authorize the use of restraints.
  • Ensure compliance with departmental policies and procedures.

Staff Development

  • Develop and conduct in-service training classes.
  • Assist in planning and conducting annual facility in-service training programs.
  • Plan and supervise clinical supervision for nurse aide trainees.
  • Attend and participate in continuing education programs.

Safety and Sanitation

  • Develop safety standards for the nursing service department.
  • Evaluate and classify tasks involving potential exposure to blood/body fluids.
  • Train personnel on the use and disposal of personal protective equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations.
