Registered Nurse (RN) Sepsis Coordinator

About the role
Part-time position (24 hours per week) with a flexible schedule. Attendance at mandatory sepsis-related meetings is required.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with physicians and staff to facilitate early identification and intervention to decrease sepsis mortality and length of stay.
- Assist clinicians with performing comprehensive assessments by interpreting multiple, sometimes conflicting, data to identify patients with sepsis.
- Improve outcomes related to sepsis management and complex sepsis issues.
- Act as a consultant and subject matter expert, teaching patients and families on techniques related to sepsis.
- Plan, implement, and evaluate cost-effective sepsis-related continuing education programs for staff.
- Track, support, and submit hospital sepsis data to the clinical team, quality department, and national benchmarking agencies.
- Achieve departmental/organizational objectives and perform sepsis care for patients that promotes excellence.
- Develop data-driven clinical quality improvement by utilizing Inova Health System's quality improvement methodology.
- Ensure protocols and therapies for sepsis become the standard of care followed within the facility.
- Participate in rounds with physicians monitoring sepsis patients.
- Conduct monthly sepsis program meetings to evaluate outcomes, develop policies/protocols, review current best practices, and enhance the overall program.
- Coordinate process improvement activities by assigning specific tasks to various departments and conducting follow-up to ensure successful outcomes.
- Evaluate compliance with interdisciplinary sepsis documentation, sepsis bundle compliance, and physician utilization of sepsis orders.
- Participate in a minimum of 80 hours of self-development activities with a minimum of 18 formal contact hours and maintain own Team Member Continuing Education Record.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.
- Must have 16 hours in specialized sepsis education.
- 2 years of acute care experience, including one year of quality performance improvement experience.
- Licensed in the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Registered Nurse.
- Basic Life Support from the American Heart Association.
Preferred Qualifications
- 5+ years’ clinical experience in ED/Critical Care/Acute Care/Inpatient/Rapid Response Team.
- Experience with EPIC and Excel reports.
- CPR certification; knowledge of ACLS; PALS is a plus.
- Independent, self-motivated, strong communication, and critical thinking skills.
- Willingness to join the Sepsis Alliance Institute and AHA Living Learning Network.
