Registered Nurse (RN) - Same Day Surgery

About the Role

Same Day Surgery unit with 20 patient bays serving outpatient procedures including ortho, GYN, general, bariatric, robotic, urology, plastics, dental, ECT, IV therapy, and pre-admission testing. The unit operates in a collaborative, friendly, caring, and supportive culture with a skill mix of experienced nurses and aides. Elective surgeries are scheduled from 0715–1700. This is a 0.8 FTE position with rotating staggered start times (0730–0830).

Responsibilities

• Deliver individualized care using the nursing process—assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care plans tailored to each patient’s needs.
• Monitor and respond to changes in patient condition, mobilizing resources and collaborating with the healthcare team to ensure optimal outcomes.
• Promote patient safety by implementing risk-reduction strategies and reporting safety events promptly.
• Educate patients and families, adapting teaching methods to meet unique learning needs and supporting readiness for discharge.
• Coordinate care and discharge planning through an interdisciplinary approach, ensuring continuity across the healthcare continuum.
• Lead and delegate effectively, fostering teamwork and supporting unlicensed personnel.
• Engage in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient experience and unit performance.
• Maintain professional growth through ongoing education, competency completion, and participation in shared governance activities.

Requirements

• Completion of an accredited or approved program in nursing
• Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which the teammate practices
• Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association
• 1-2 years of inpatient nursing experience in med/surg, ICU, ED, or periop

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN)

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Frequent sitting, standing, walking, lifting, squatting, bending, reaching above shoulders, and twisting throughout the workday.
• Ability to lift and support up to 35 pounds in handling patients, medical equipment, and supplies.
• Ability to push/pull with 30 lbs. of force and perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present.
• Functional speech, vision, hearing, and touch with fine hand manipulation skills for IV insertion and other procedures.
• Ability to maneuver foot pedals on carts or machines.
• Perform physical safety interventions such as patient restraint and verbal de-escalation, if needed.
• Exposure to chemical and hazardous waste, blood and body fluids, and communicable diseases; protective clothing and equipment must be worn as necessary.
• Ability to respond quickly to changes in patient and/or unit conditions.
• Physical Abilities Testing may be required.
• Additional department-specific physical requirements may be identified by the nurse leader.
