Registered Nurse RN Preadmission Testing PAT

About the Role

As a Pre-Admission Testing (PAT) nurse at Banner - University Medical Center Tucson, you will oversee patient intake by performing initial physical assessments, interviewing patients to obtain medical histories, and conducting tests ordered by surgeons, such as EKGs. You may also draw blood for lab work. This full-time position operates on a varied Monday-Friday schedule with day shifts (4-10s) and does not require call, weekends, or holidays.

Responsibilities

• Assess patient physical, psychological, social, spiritual, educational, developmental, cultural, and discharge planning needs.
• Review patient history and physical with patient/family, ensuring completion within appropriate timeframes.
• Review diagnostics and laboratory data, reporting abnormal results to physicians and caregivers.
• Complete assessments and reassessments according to patient needs and organizational policies.
• Formulate and implement a plan of care, including discharge planning, utilizing assessment data and input from patients, families, and the healthcare team.
• Set realistic, measurable goals in collaboration with the patient and family, considering physical, cultural, psychosocial, spiritual, age-specific, and educational needs.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to plan and revise care based on changing patient needs.
• Implement the plan of care through direct patient care, coordination, delegation, and supervision of healthcare team activities.
• Provide care in compliance with physician orders, nursing plans, policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
• Delegate and supervise care provided by licensed and non-licensed personnel.
• Promote continuity of care by accurately communicating patient status to other caregivers.
• Evaluate patient and family responses to care and teaching, revising the plan of care as needed.
• Document assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation in the patient record in a legible, timely, and policy-compliant manner.
• Provide care based on best evidence and participate in research activities within clinical practice.
• Participate in unit or facility shared leadership, education, role development, and orientation of personnel, patients, students, families, and visitors.
• Contribute to excellent patient outcomes through timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and safe care.
• Actively participate in improving national nursing quality indicators and outcomes, including professional organizations.
• Interact with staff across departments, physicians, patients, families, external healthcare institutions, community providers, and agencies.
• Synthesize and prioritize data from multiple sources to support patient and family responses to health status changes.
• Perform all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory, and accreditation requirements.
• Demonstrate core and leader behaviors to provide an excellent service experience for all Banner Health customers.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Provide direction and supervision to licensed and non-licensed personnel in delivering quality care and services.

Physical Demands

• Able to stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch frequently.
• Possess physical agility and adequate reaction time to respond to unexpected patient care needs.
• Adequate hearing and visual acuity, including color vision.
• Fine motor skills, adequate eye-hand coordination, and ability to grasp and handle objects.
• Use proper body mechanics to assist patients in ambulating, transferring in and out of bed, chair, or wheelchair.
• May be required to lift up to 75 pounds.
• Must use standard precautions due to exposure to blood and bodily fluids.
• Ability to communicate effectively through reading, writing, and speaking in person or on the telephone.
• Periodic use of a personal computer.

Requirements

• Current, valid RN license in the state of practice, temporary/interim RN license, or compact RN licensure for the current state of practice.
• BLS certification required.
• Additional certification or continuing education may be required based on the area of practice.
• Experience in the clinical area for which you are applying is desired.
• Must maintain clinical performance competencies appropriate to the area of work, demonstrated through annual validations.
• For Banner Registry and Travel acute care positions: Minimum of one year of experience in an acute care hospital setting within the past 12 months as a Registered Nurse in the specialty area.
• For Banner Registry and Travel physician practice positions: Minimum of one year of experience as a Registered Nurse in a physician practice or acute care setting.
• For Home Health settings: Ability to operate a personal vehicle with a valid driver’s license and active auto insurance coverage.
• For Behavioral Health clinical settings serving children in Arizona: Possession of an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintained throughout employment. An Arizona Criminal History Affidavit must be signed upon hire.
• For BUMCS Behavioral Health clinical settings: Possession of an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintained throughout employment.
• For Banner Home Care AZ: Possession of an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintained throughout employment.
• For Banner Staffing (BSS) Behavioral Health roles in Arizona: Possession of a State of Arizona Department of Public Safety Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintained throughout employment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
• Professional certification in a relevant specialty.
• Additional related education and/or experience.
