About the role

The New Graduate RN Residency Program at Banner Health is a full-time Registered Nurse position designed to assist you in transitioning from a new graduate to a fully competent, professional nurse. This program, accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) as a Practice Transition Accreditation Program® (PTAP), provides a collaborative learning environment where you can refine your nursing skills, enhance your knowledge, and develop new personal and professional relationships.

Successful candidates will be placed in specific units at Banner Health facilities to be clinically mentored by unit staff and educators. The program offers multiple Career Pathways and development opportunities to help you achieve your long-term career goals, whether in specialty units, leadership roles, non-bedside nursing, or other sectors. You are expected to stay on your assigned unit for at least 12 months to gain a comprehensive training experience. Most new nurses work three 12-hour shifts, including weekend and holiday rotations.

Requirements

• Recent or upcoming graduation from an accredited nursing program (BSN preferred; ADN accepted at select locations)
• Current BLS card (through American Heart Association, Red Cross, or ASHI) or ability to obtain certification before the start date
• No more than 12 months of RN experience
• Previous healthcare experience preferred
• Must live within a reasonable commute distance of the assigned facility

Unit Description

Join the Medical, Surgical, and Oncology team at Banner University Medical Center-Phoenix, a Magnet-designated academic teaching hospital located in downtown Phoenix. This 30-bed Hematology/Oncology/Palliative Care unit provides high-acuity care and innovative treatment options, including specialized training for Chemotherapy validation and support for Oncology Certification. The unit also houses the In-Patient Hospice Program and a dedicated Acute Palliative Care service line.

Nurses on this unit participate in the Nursing Clinical Ladder Program and have access to self-scheduling tools for shift and weekend coverage. A day shift role (7AM-7:30PM) is currently available, with an 18% night shift differential and a flat rate $3/hour weekend shift differential.

Responsibilities

• Assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and document nursing care in accordance with organizational policies and professional standards.
• Assess patient physical, psychological, social, spiritual, educational, developmental, cultural, and discharge planning needs.
• Review patient history, diagnostics, and laboratory data; report abnormal results to physicians and caregivers.
• Formulate and implement a plan of care, including discharge planning, utilizing assessment data and input from the patient, family, and healthcare team.
• Provide care based on physician orders and the nursing plan of care, ensuring compliance with policies and regulatory requirements.
• Delegate and supervise care provided by other licensed nurses and personnel.
• Promote continuity of care through accurate and complete communication with other caregivers.
• Evaluate patient and family response to care and teaching; revise the plan of care as needed.
• Document assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation in the patient record in a timely and legible manner.
• Participate in shared leadership, education, orientation, and mentoring activities.
• Contribute to improving nursing quality indicators and outcomes, including participation in professional organizations.
• Interact with staff, physicians, patients, families, and external contacts to support patient care.
• Synthesize and prioritize data from multiple sources to support patient and family responses to health status changes.

Qualifications

• Current, valid RN license in the state of practice, temporary/interim RN license, or compact RN licensure.
• BLS certification required; additional certification or continuing education may be required based on area of practice.
• Experience in the clinical area for which you are applying is desired.
• Must maintain clinical performance competencies appropriate to the area of work.
• For Registry and Travel positions: Minimum of one year of experience in an acute care setting within the past 12 months.
• For Home Health settings: Valid driver’s license, active auto insurance, and ability to operate a personal vehicle.
• For Banner Behavioral Health Hospital, BTMC Behavioral, Banner Home Care/Hospice, or Boswell Skilled Nursing Facility: Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card required.
• For Banner MD Anderson on the Banner University Medical Center Phoenix campus: State of Arizona Department of Public Safety Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card required.
