About the Program

The Banner Health New Nurse Experience (NNE) is a full-time Registered Nurse position designed to assist new graduates in transitioning to fully competent, professional nurses. This program offers a collaborative learning environment to refine nursing skills, enhance knowledge, and develop personal and professional relationships.

Successful candidates will be placed in specific units at Banner Health facilities for clinical mentorship by unit staff and educators. The program provides multiple Career Pathways and development opportunities to help achieve long-term career goals, whether in specialty units, leadership roles, non-bedside nursing, or other sectors. Participants are expected to stay on their assigned unit for at least 12 months to gain a comprehensive training experience and must live within a reasonable commute distance of their facility.

Most new nurses will work three 12-hour shifts, including weekend and holiday rotations with other staff members.

Requirements

• Recent or upcoming graduation from an accredited nursing program (BSN preferred; ADN accepted at select locations)
• Current BLS card (American Heart Association, Red Cross, or ASHI) or ability to obtain certification before the start date
• No more than 12 months of RN experience
• Previous healthcare experience preferred

Unit Description

As a Registered Nurse with the Medical Surgical team at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center, you will work with a diverse patient population in a state-of-the-art Level 1 Trauma Facility. The Medical Surgical units include General, Oncology, Behavioral Health, and Trauma, with 20-30 private-room beds and highly complex patient populations. The team follows a family-centered quality care model with an interdisciplinary approach, including 24-hour Hospitalist coverage, Respiratory Therapists, Nutritionists, Case Management, Social Services, PT/OT, and Pharmacists.

Responsibilities

• Assess patient physical, psychological, social, spiritual, educational, developmental, cultural, and discharge planning needs.
• Review patient history and physical with patient/family and ensure completion within appropriate timeframes.
• Review diagnostics and laboratory data, reporting abnormal results to physicians and caregivers.
• Complete assessments and reassessments as needed.
• Formulate and implement a plan of care, including discharge planning, using assessment data and input from patients, families, and the health team.
• Set realistic, measurable goals in collaboration with the patient/family.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to review and revise the plan of care based on changing patient needs.
• Provide direct patient care, coordination, delegation, and supervision of health care team activities in compliance with policies, standards of care, and regulatory requirements.
• Promote continuity of care through accurate and complete communication with other caregivers.
• Evaluate patient and family responses to care and teaching, revising the plan of care as needed.
• Document assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation in the patient record in a legible, timely, and policy-compliant manner.
• Provide care based on best evidence and participate in research activities within clinical practice.
• Participate in unit or facility shared leadership, education, role development, and orientation of personnel, patients, students, families, and visitors.
• Contribute to professional growth through precepting and mentoring when appropriate.
• Actively participate in improving national nursing quality indicators and outcomes.
• Interact with staff, physicians, patients, families, and external contacts to support patient care.
• Synthesize and prioritize data from multiple sources to support patient and family responses to health status changes.

Qualifications

• Current, valid RN license in the state of practice, temporary/interim RN license, or compact RN licensure.
• BLS certification required; additional certification or continuing education may be required based on area of practice.
• Experience in the clinical area of application is desired.
• Must maintain clinical performance competencies appropriate to the area of work.
• Banner Registry and Travel acute care positions require at least one year of experience in an acute care hospital setting within the past 12 months.
• Banner Registry and Travel physician practice positions require at least one year of experience as a Registered Nurse in a physician practice or acute care setting.
• For Home Health settings, must operate a personal vehicle with a valid driver’s license and active auto insurance.
• Employees in behavioral health settings serving children must possess an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card (or Colorado Fingerprint Clearance Card for Banner McKee Senior Behavioral Health Inpatient Unit).
• Employees in Banner Staffing (BSS) Behavioral Health roles in Arizona must possess a State of Arizona Department of Public Safety Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree preferred.
• Professional certification preferred.
