About the role

The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Neurology Med/Surg unit functions as a care provider within a multidisciplinary team, delivering patient care through the nursing process of assessment, diagnosing, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The RN integrates knowledge of patient age and cultural diversity into care, demonstrates strong time management and prioritization skills, contributes to quality nursing care through performance improvement initiatives, collaborates with professional disciplines, and supports the mission of providing physical and psychological support to patients and families.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to establish goals and strategies for meeting patient discharge or continuing care needs.
• Perform and document complete patient assessments; initiate and maintain current nursing care plans for assigned patients.
• Identify patient learning needs and provide individualized, comprehensive teaching.
• Administer medications safely, consistent with state practice and organizational policies.
• Serve as a point of contact for patient care coordination across hospital departments.
• Act as a patient safety advocate by participating in ongoing quality improvement.
• Serve as a patient advocate in collaboration with spiritual care, palliative care, and ethics.
• Assign patient care based on nursing skill, knowledge, and scope of practice of staff.
• Orient, facilitate learning, and provide education to nursing staff and others based on quality improvement indicators and outcomes.
• Provide evidence-based patient care in accordance with current standards of practice, policy, and mission.
• Perform comprehensive assessments of patient clinical conditions and psychosocial needs, including supportive resources.
• Safely and efficiently develop, implement, and prioritize plans of care.
• Apply the nursing process in patient care delivery.
• Assess patient responses to treatment to evaluate intervention effectiveness and revise plans of care accordingly.
• Assist patients and families in coping with illness.
• Collaborate with others in delivering coordinated patient care.
• Apply cultural diversity and inclusion principles in patient care.
• Recognize limitations and seek assistance or acquire information to perform safely.
• Advance personal and professional growth through educational programs, literature, in-services, and workshops.

Requirements

• Current RN license in the state of employment or covered by compact (required).
• BLS (Basic Life Support) certification (preferred upon hire; must obtain from an approved source prior to direct patient care; ACLS acceptable in lieu of BLS).
• One year of RN experience (required).
• Six months of RN experience in an acute care hospital setting (preferred).

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
• Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification (RN-BC).
• Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) certification.
• Progressive Care Certified Nurse (PCCN).
• Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN).
• National Institute of Health (NIH) Stroke Certification.
