About the role
As an integral part of the Emergency Department team, the Registered Nurse (RN) serves as the primary contact for the Care Center, managing the business aspects of a patient's stay. This role ensures the smooth flow of information throughout the unit and among the patient care team, while maintaining a patient-focused environment. Responsibilities include admitting, maintaining census information, managing the medical record from registration to admission or discharge, coordinating patient movement, scheduling procedures, and performing unit reception duties.
Responsibilities

- Register patients for procedures and validate demographic and insurance data.
- Discuss state mandatory regulations and expectations upon admission.
- Verify and enter demographic and insurance information.
- Collect deposits, obtain precerts, and secure authorizations when necessary.
- Conduct patient registration using a computerized system to ensure all pertinent information is received.
- Conduct intake of new patients, enter financial information, and review proof of family income for self-pay patients to assign sliding fee categories.
- Register patients, generate medical records, and correct inaccurate registration information as needed.
- Maintain census and charge information.
- Assign beds to incoming patients and update the Admissions, Discharge, Transfer (ADT) system.
- Compile information and perform data entry for charge capture.
- Schedule appropriate tests, medical procedures, and follow-up appointments.
- Maintain records of admissions, discharges, transfers, and deaths.
- Prepare various records and charts required by unit clerical activities.
- Schedule appointments and arrange transportation for patients leaving the unit for diagnostic testing and therapy.
- Notify relevant departments of pending admissions, discharges, transfers, and changes in patient status.
- Make discharge arrangements, including clinic appointments, referrals, valuables retrieval, and transportation.
- Perform secretarial duties on the patient care unit and interact with patients and visitors.
- Prepare and maintain all patient charts from admission through discharge.
- Ensure all patient charts are complete, properly identified, and maintained in the correct order.
- Perform other secretarial duties as directed by the Manager or charge designee.
- Verify and accurately enter demographic and insurance information into hospital systems.
- File records designated for chart storage, such as lab results and x-ray reports.
- Interact with patients and visitors.
- Round on patients and families.
- Answer telephones, call lights, and patient intercoms in a timely and appropriate manner.
- Locate personnel and relay messages promptly.
- Greet visitors cordially and respectfully.
- Respond to questions and provide directions to patients, visitors, and healthcare professionals.
- Provide non-medical information regarding patients where appropriate.
- Prevent unauthorized access to chart material until reviewed by appropriate staff.
- Assist patients with guest services.
- Arrange or assist with rental of television and telephone services.
- Contact Security to secure valuables.
- Assist with patient mail and deliveries.
- Receive and maintain business office and inventory for the care center.
- Pick up and distribute mail accordingly.
- Maintain the department’s file system, including preparing new files and labels.
- Maintain inventory of office supplies and equipment, ordering as needed.
- Participate in the implementation of the treatment plan developed by the professional staff, patient, and family.
- Assist other staff members in providing support for patient care activities.
- Complete assignments within established time frames.
- Ensure all schedules (e.g., Tele-tracking, transport tracking, OR schedule, on-call schedules) are available and updated.
- Give report to the oncoming Business Associates.
- Participate in the orientation of new Business Associates.
- Escalate problems to appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Verify insurance eligibility with third-party payors, employers, and other sources.
- Actively participate as a member of the healthcare team.
- Comply with written policies and procedures.

Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Interpersonal skills to communicate and collaborate effectively with care center team members.
- 6-9 months of healthcare-related experience to become familiar with healthcare policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of keyboarding and basic computer skills.
- Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
- Successful completion of Business Associate training program and competency-based orientation.
- Knowledge of insurance processes.
Schedule
- Work Shift: Evening (3 PM - 11:30 PM).
- Scheduled Daily Hours: 7.5 hours.
- Work Days: Alternate weekends.
Pay
Hourly Rate: $28.00. For positions that have only a rate listed, the displayed rate is the hiring rate but could be subject to change based on shift differential, experience, education, or other relevant factors.
