About the Department

1 East is a locked 36-bed, secured unit serving patients aged 18 through older adult. Services are for individuals with life-threatening and/or severely incapacitating symptoms, where the potential for harm to self or others is considered serious. Patients are admitted through the Psychiatric Access department in the Emergency Department at Trinity Health Ann Arbor, typically following face-to-face assessments, though transfers or direct admissions from other locations may also occur.

Schedule

• Full-time, 8-hour shifts
• Shifts available:
  • Evening: 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM
  • Night: 11:00 PM – 7:30 AM
  • Day: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
• Every other weekend and holiday rotation required

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited nursing program
• Current Michigan Nursing License
• BLS certification required
• All new hires must have a BSN degree or must agree in writing to obtain their BSN within five (5) years from date of hire or transfer to an RN role

Skills and Abilities

• Experience in Behavioral Health highly preferred
• Knowledge of nursing theory, practice, and age-specific needs
• Interpersonal skills necessary to initiate and maintain collegial relationships with coworkers and therapeutic relationships with patients and families
• Critical thinking skills to perform principal duties and responsibilities
• Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when planning and performing professional nursing care

Responsibilities

• View patients holistically, considering physical, psychosocial, emotional, age-specific, cultural, and spiritual factors
• Demonstrate appropriate assessment skills for identified patient populations
• Demonstrate critical thinking by gathering and analyzing patient information, then responding to patient situations
• Develop, implement, evaluate, and revise an individualized plan of care using evidence-based interventions and standards of care
• Identify needs and plan for care across the continuum, considering patient and family preferences
• Identify patient and family education needs, develop and implement teaching plans based on evidence-based practice, and utilize teach-back methodology to ensure effective learning
• Identify necessary resources to assure readiness for discharge and collaborate with other disciplines to develop a discharge plan
• Create an environment that promotes a positive patient experience
• Communicate both verbal and written information (including documentation in the EMR) accurately, timely, concisely, and thoroughly
• Effectively communicate patient status, priority goals, and interventions to colleagues and other disciplines during consultation, rounds, and handoffs
• Maintain good rapport and cooperative relationships, approach conflict constructively, and help identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution
