Job Overview

We are seeking experienced Registered Nurses (RNs) for a long-term federal healthcare assignment supporting the Indian Health Service (IHS) in Shiprock, New Mexico. The selected candidates will provide outpatient and/or inpatient nursing services and deliver high-quality, culturally sensitive patient care in accordance with IHS policies, nursing standards, and applicable federal healthcare requirements. The assignment supports healthcare services within the Navajo Area Indian Health Service, including facilities serving American Indian and Alaska Native communities.

Work Schedule

The specific shift or tour of duty will be determined by the Nursing Supervisor and facility requirements. Shifts may vary and may include 8-hour, 10-hour, or 12-hour schedules, as well as weekends and holidays. Candidates should be flexible to support different nursing units as needed.

Pre-Employment Requirements

Selected candidates may be required to complete:

  • Fitness-for-duty medical evaluation
  • Required immunization and vaccination documentation
  • Tuberculosis screening
  • Background investigation
  • Fingerprinting and security clearance
  • Mandatory orientation and facility-specific training

Employment and assignment are conditional upon successful completion of the required background and security screening processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide professional nursing care to patients in outpatient and/or inpatient settings
  • Assess patient needs and deliver safe, effective, and compassionate nursing care
  • Administer medications and treatments in accordance with established nursing standards and protocols
  • Perform and maintain competency in areas such as:
    • IV therapy and venipuncture
    • Medication administration
    • Pain management
    • Patient restraints
    • Emergency procedures
    • Age-specific patient care
    • Documentation and charting
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and clear patient documentation
  • Protect patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA, Privacy Act requirements, and IHS policies
  • Follow facility policies, standards of care, hospital protocols, and applicable nursing regulations
  • Work collaboratively with physicians, nursing supervisors, and other healthcare professionals
  • Remain flexible and rotate between duty sections when needed to support patient care
  • Demonstrate professionalism, effective communication, ethical conduct, and cultural sensitivity
  • Utilize required IHS information technology systems and comply with IT security procedures
  • Attend mandatory orientation and facility-specific training

Required Qualifications

  • Active, current, and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license from any U.S. state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory
  • Minimum 36 months (3 years) of nursing experience
  • At least 2 years of experience in the required nursing specialty, where applicable
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English effectively
  • Basic computer and healthcare IT skills
  • Ability to work professionally and respectfully with diverse patient populations and demonstrate cultural awareness

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with one or more of the following certifications are preferred, depending on the assigned duty section:

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
  • Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses (ATCN)
  • Newborn Life Support (NLS)

Experience in the following areas is also preferred:

  • Ambulatory care
  • Primary care
  • Outpatient care
  • Inpatient care
  • Rural healthcare
  • Emergency nursing
  • Indian Health Service (IHS) or similar healthcare settings
