Responsibilities
- Complete patient assessment and reassessment as clinically indicated, documenting detailed information about the patient’s physical, mental, and emotional status, plan of care, interventions, and outcomes.
- Ensure appropriate documentation based on the level of care, including transfer/discharge documentation.
- Follow the five Rights of Medication Administration; assess patients prior to administering medications, noting allergies, parameters, potential side effects, and effectiveness, and intervene as needed.
- Reassess and document patient response to medications according to hospital policy.
- Coordinate and supervise the delivery of nursing care, including delegation of tasks while maintaining accountability for care provided.
- Promote a culture of safety by assessing patients for potential risks and adhering to hospital safety policies and procedures.
- Conduct bedside shift reports and rounds with peers at change of shift.
- Document the application of the nursing process in a responsible, accountable, and ethical manner.
- Ensure appropriate patient hand-off when leaving for breaks.
- Assess learning needs of patients, families, and significant others; plan and provide instruction using applicable teaching methods and document responses.
- Care for specific patient populations as necessary, regardless of location.
- Deliver patient-centered care by embracing cultural diversity, respecting dignity, maintaining open communication, and actively listening.
- Meet accreditation, regulatory, and compliance responsibilities related to the position.
- Promote a culture of learning and growth by seeking experiences and formal/independent learning activities to develop clinical and professional skills.
- Mentor others to succeed.
- Perform other duties as assigned within the state nursing scope of practice.
Requirements
- Graduated from an accredited school of nursing with an Associate’s Degree (required) or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (preferred).
- Current and unobstructed New York State Registered Nurse (RN) license (required for NY hospitals).
- Current and unobstructed Connecticut Registered Nurse license (required for CT hospitals; new graduates awaiting licensure may be considered at the discretion of the Chief Nursing Officer in CT).
- American Nurses Association (ANA) endorsed certifications or Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses Certification preferred (based on specialty and hours of work requirement).
Skills & Training
The following certifications are required or preferred based on unit and role:
- BLS (Basic Life Support): Required for all nursing care areas upon hire.
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support): Required for ED, ICU, CCU, SDU, PCU, PACU, Cath Lab, GI, LDRP, IR, and Float Pool (specific to competency and location).
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support): Required by end of orientation for ED, PACU, and Pediatric Areas (either PALS or ENPC).
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program): Required by end of orientation for MCH, NICU, LDRP, and DR.
- EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring): Required within 1 year of hire for LDRP.
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course): Required within 1 year of hire for ED (Danbury, Norwalk) and preferred for ICU and PACU.
- ENPC (Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course): Required within 1 year of hire for ED (either PALS or ENPC).
- TCAR (Transcarotid Artery Revascularization): Required within 1 year of hire for ICU (VBMC) and preferred for ICU/PACU (NH).
- CPI or other de-escalation technique training: Required within 6 months of hire for Behavioral Health, ED, Float Pool (Putnam 6W, Norwalk), ICU, PCU, and 9 Tower (DH).
- S.T.A.B.L.E.: Required within 6 months of hire for OB (NDH only).
- Chemotherapy Certification: Required within 1 year of hire for Inpatient Oncology.
Working Conditions
- Manual: Significant manual skills, motor coordination, and finger dexterity required.
- Occupational: Some occupational risk present.
- Physical Effort: Medium to heavy effort; may exert up to 35 lbs. of force.
- Physical Environment: Exposure to dirt, odors, noise, and human waste may occur.
Pay
Hourly salary range: $41.00 - $76.16.
