Registered Nurse Post Partum

About the Role

Join our team as a Post Partum RN in the Birthplace at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital. We support women in our culturally diverse community and across the state who may need additional attention due to high-risk pregnancies or fetal diagnoses. The Birthplace partners with the University of MN to support the development of student nurses and residents through onsite observation and training, enhancing evidence-based practice and ongoing professional learning.

The Newborn Family Care Center-Postpartum features 24 beds with private Mom/Baby rooms, offering Couplet Care. The care delivery team includes RNs and NST/NAs, with an average of 3 couplets on day/evening shifts and 4 couplets on night shifts. Professional growth is encouraged through certifications and IBCLC opportunities, with an inpatient Lactation Consultant available on the unit. Newborn IV antibiotic administration is also provided.

Responsibilities

• Assess patient needs and identify expected nursing outcomes, involving the patient, family, and healthcare team in data gathering.
• Use an ongoing, systematic process to collect relevant biological, psychological, spiritual, and social information from patients and families.
• Analyze data to identify potential risks, prioritize needs, and determine priority problems.
• Identify age-appropriate, culturally appropriate, realistic, and attainable outcomes, validating them with the patient, family, and healthcare team.
• Document data and identified outcomes.
• Implement nursing interventions based on the plan of care, adhering to policies, procedures, and nursing practice guidelines.
• Coordinate nursing care with other healthcare team members.
• Initiate age- and culturally-appropriate measures to support patient needs and achieve expected outcomes.
• Provide patient/family teaching tailored to age, readiness to learn, and available resources.
• Collaborate, consult, or make referrals when unable to perform safely and independently.
• Delegate direct and indirect patient care activities to appropriate personnel based on needs, condition, risk, complexity, and predictability of outcomes.
• Ensure all actions are based on scientific, ethical, or ecological principles; proven effectiveness; past experience; practice standards; and patient/family requests and values.
• Use therapeutic modalities to support and augment the healing process, moving from least to most intensive as needed.
• Document interventions according to practice guidelines.
• Anticipate, recognize, and respond to emergent situations.

Requirements

• MN Registered Nurse (RN) License.
• Basic Life Support certification (American Heart Association or Red Cross).
• Current NRP certification.
• Must be currently working on the Postpartum or Labor and Delivery unit.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.
• At least 3 years of OB experience on the UMMC Postpartum/L&D unit.
• Currently working at UMMC Postpartum/L&D unit.

Schedule

This position involves working 48 hours every two weeks on the night shift, with 12-hour shifts and every third weekend.
