Registered Nurse - Operating Room Part Time

About the Role

At Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, Registered Nurses are critical members of the team who diagnose and treat responses to actual or potential health problems through nursing methods and techniques such as case finding, health teaching, and counseling. They provide care supporting and restorative of health and well-being while adhering to a medical regimen.

Responsibilities

• Assess the patient’s condition and nursing needs; coordinate nursing care activities with other health disciplines involved in the treatment effort.
• Develop a written individualized care plan, including teaching needs and discharge planning.
• Administer direct care when professional nursing skills and judgment are required.
• Administer medication and practice infection control.
• Maintain a clean and safe environment.
• Assume responsibility and accountability for the delivery of nursing care to all assigned patients.
• Communicate changes in patient’s condition and questions regarding patient care to Charge RN/Clinician.
• Develop and maintain a current written plan of care for assigned patients.
• Set priorities and patient goals with the patient and/or family.
• Document evidence of patient/family teaching and their responses in the medical record.
• Ensure patient education and instructions are consistent with those of the physician or designee.
• Communicate and work effectively with other staff and departments.
• Participate in unit or hospital-based quality assurance activities or committees.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
• Possession of or eligibility for a license to practice as a Registered Nurse in New York State.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification from the American Heart Association within 3 months of hire (within 6 months for new graduates).

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree (required within 10 years of initial RN licensure under New York State Education Law 6905).
• CNOR certification.
• Recent Operating Room (OR) experience.

Physical Demands

• Ability to stand, walk, and move quickly for extended periods, especially during emergencies.
• Assist with patient transfers, repositioning, and physical interventions.
• Lift and/or transfer patients, including those who may be physically aggressive or uncooperative, using appropriate safety techniques.
• Handle equipment and supplies needed for emergency care.
• React quickly to situations involving physical restraint, patient agitation, or aggression.
• Provide physical support in restraining or de-escalating patients if necessary.
• Use medical instruments, perform assessments, administer medications, and manage equipment with precision.
• Maintain physical and mental alertness during long shifts, including night shifts and weekends.
• Manage high-stress situations with clear decision-making and physical capacity.
• Respond quickly and take rapid action, including using physical restraint procedures to stabilize patients in crisis.

Occasional travel to other locations may be required to support operational needs. Summer in-house weekends and holidays, as well as on-call shifts, are required.

Pay

$54.62 - $65.55 per hour (based on relevant experience).
