About the Role

Provides professional nursing care for assigned patients according to established standards and practices. Duties include assessment of patients, developing a plan of care, implementing the plan of care, and evaluating the plan of care to meet the hospital's core mission of high-quality care.

Qualifications

  • Associate Degree in Nursing from a state-accredited school (Required)
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from a state-accredited School of Professional Nursing (Preferred)
  • 1 or more years of nursing experience (Preferred)

Licenses and Certifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) with current Georgia license (Required)
  • AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) (Required)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – must be obtained prior to completing unit orientation
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) – must be obtained prior to completing unit orientation
  • Advanced Stroke Life Support (ASLS) or Georgia Stroke Core Curriculum (GSCC) and National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) – must be obtained within 2 years of hire

Responsibilities

Assessment and Diagnosis

  • Collects data in a systematic and ongoing process
  • Identifies issues and develops diagnoses based on assessment data
  • Prioritizes data collection based on the patient's condition and needs
  • Identifies expected outcomes and plans based on diagnoses or issues

Care Planning and Implementation

  • Develops an individualized plan with strategies that address diagnoses
  • Ensures continuity through a plan that directs other members of the team
  • Implements the plan in a safe and timely manner
  • Documents implementation and includes changes or omissions of the identified plan
  • Consults with healthcare providers and makes referrals as appropriate
  • Utilizes appropriate community resources and systems to implement the plan

Documentation

  • Documents and submits required information and data in a timely fashion
  • Clearly and accurately documents designated processes, policies, products, and service offerings
  • Ensures documentation is tailored to expected readers/users
  • Uses correct terminology and conforms to required style and format

Outcomes and Evaluation

  • Develops expected outcomes that provide direction for continuity of care
  • Involves patient/family and other disciplines to determine expected outcomes
  • Modifies expected outcomes based on changes in the assessment of the patient
  • Includes the patient and others involved in the care in the evaluation process
  • Evaluates the plan in relation to patient responses and expected outcomes
  • Documents the results of the evaluation

Quality and Nursing Practice

  • Uses the results of quality improvement activities in nursing practice
  • Uses creativity and innovation in nursing practice to improve care delivery
  • Incorporates evidence-based knowledge to initiate change in nursing practice
  • Participates in quality improvement activities

Nursing ANA Code of Ethics

  • Accountable for individual practice and delegation to provide optimum care
  • Practices with compassion and respect
  • Primary commitment is to advocate for the patient, family, and community
  • Assures patient safety through competency and growth of self and others
  • Contributes to a healthy work environment through shared decision-making
  • Collaborates with other health professionals to meet healthcare needs

Neuroscience-Specific Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates competency in assessment, planning, treatment, and evaluation of patients experiencing stroke or stroke-like symptoms
  • Provides appropriate stroke-related education to the patient and/or family/caregiver
  • Knowledgeable in stroke performance measures and how they relate to patient outcomes
  • Coordinates multidisciplinary care of the stroke patient
  • Completes a total of 4 hours of stroke-related education annually

Additional Duties

  • Adheres to the hospital and departmental attendance and punctuality guidelines
  • Performs all job responsibilities in alignment with the core values, mission, and vision of the organization
  • Performs other duties as required and completes all job functions as per departmental policies and procedures
  • Maintains current knowledge in present areas of responsibility (e.g., self-education, attends ongoing educational programs)
  • Attends staff meetings and completes mandatory in-services, requirements, and competency evaluations on time
  • Demonstrates competency at all levels in providing care to all patients based on age, sex, weight, and demonstrated needs
  • Wears protective clothing and equipment as appropriate
