About the Unit
FMC Med-Surg is a 24-bed unit specializing in acute care and post-surgical patients using an interdisciplinary approach. The team of nursing and ancillary staff provides excellent and safe patient care. The unit also houses a Swing Bed program, licensed for up to 10 patients, where nursing, PT/OT/ST, dietary, and care management teams collaborate to promote patient independence. As a rural facility, nurses develop critical thinking skills and versatility. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:6.
Responsibilities
- Plans, coordinates, and directs quality, compassionate care while maintaining standards of professional nursing practice and creating positive therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
- Supervises LPNs, PCAs, PCAs/US, US, Ortho Techs, and other non-licensed staff.
- Assesses each assigned patient’s condition on admission and ongoing, including physical, psychological, social, spiritual, cultural, pain, nutritional, functional, developmental, and discharge planning needs.
- Plans, provides, and documents patient and family education based on identified needs and barriers to learning.
- Evaluates and reevaluates patient care, coordinating with patients, families, providers, and other disciplines to achieve patient-centered outcomes.
- Assigns and delegates nursing care to team members based on patient needs and team capabilities.
- Applies safety principles in care delivery and accurately documents observations, care provided, and changes in the care plan.
- Provides accurate handoff reports and participates in unit-based huddles.
- Assists in performance improvement activities, including serving on PI teams, supporting measures, and implementing changes.
- Performs initial and annual competency evaluations per job class and adheres to DCH Standards for performance, satisfaction, and compliance.
- Adheres to DCH Behavioral Standards, ensuring positive relationships with patients, families, coworkers, and colleagues.
- Performs essential job functions safely for patients, visitors, and employees, identifying and reducing unsafe practices.
- Uses electronic systems, including email, time and attendance software, learning management software, and the intranet.
- Follows all DCH Health System policies and procedures.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Current Alabama Board of Nursing RN license or multi-state license (or ability to obtain prior to start).
- Current American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider certification.
- BSN preferred; minimum Associate’s degree required.
- Ability to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
