Registered Nurse II - PICU
About the Role
The Registered Nurse II provides individualized, goal-directed patient care to families and patients at the competent level using the principles and practices of the nursing process. Delivers safe and effective care, interacts with multidisciplinary team members, and coordinates care to achieve desired outcomes in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).
Responsibilities
- Provide nursing care using the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation).
- Direct and lead assigned team members, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver age/developmentally appropriate care.
- Deliver patient/family-centered care focusing on physical, emotional, spiritual, cultural, religious, and environmental needs.
- Assess, develop nursing diagnoses, identify outcomes, plan, implement interventions, coordinate care, and evaluate goals and interventions.
- Maintain a safe, therapeutic, and healing environment through patient privacy and professional behavior.
- Participate in a professional practice model, including shared governance, peer review, and professional development.
- Coordinate effective and efficient delivery of patient care services using care management principles.
- Identify clinical priorities and initiate action to improve patient outcomes.
- Provide complex supportive therapies, including ventilatory and cardiac support, ECMO/CRRT, renal or peritoneal dialysis.
Unit Details
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a 28-bed unit providing intensive and intermediate care to children ages 0-18 across South Carolina. The unit cares for patients with medical and surgical diagnoses, including respiratory compromise, trauma, post-operative surgical needs, and neurology/neurosurgery. All PICU beds are monitored, and the staffing mix includes Registered Nurses, Patient Care Technicians, Unit Secretaries, Respiratory Therapy, Pediatric Dietitians, and Pediatric Pharmacists. Pediatric Palliative care is available as needed.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred. RN staff hired on or after July 1, 2013, with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing must enroll in an accredited BSN program within two years and obtain a BSN degree within four years.
- Minimum of one year of work experience as a registered nurse.
- Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (American Heart Association or American Red Cross equivalent).
Physical and Mental Requirements
- Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, or walking continuously.
- Ability to climb stairs, work from elevated areas, and in confined/cramped spaces frequently.
- Ability to bend at the waist, twist, squat, and perform pinching, grasping, and fine manipulation continuously.
- Ability to reach overhead, in all directions, and perform repetitive motions continuously.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. unassisted (infrequent).
- Ability to exert up to 50 lbs. of force (e.g., transferring patients, pushing wheelchairs or stretchers).
- Ability to maintain 20/40 vision (corrected), depth perception, color discrimination, and peripheral vision continuously.
- Ability to maintain hearing acuity (with correction) continuously.
- Ability to perform gross and fine motor functions continuously.
- Ability to deal effectively with stressful situations continuously.
- Ability to work rotating shifts, overtime, and in a latex-safe environment frequently.
- Ability to maintain tactile sensory functions continuously.
- Selected positions may require maintaining olfactory sensory function or being physically qualified for respirator use.
Schedule
36 scheduled weekly hours, working 3-12 hour shifts including weekends and holidays.
Pay
Hourly pay rate, classified under Health-28 pay grade.
