About the Role
The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) operates 12 facilities, including Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute (SVMHI), a 72-bed Joint Commission accredited State Mental Health Facility in Danville, VA. DBHDS supports individuals by promoting recovery, self-determination, and wellness for those with mental illness, intellectual disability, or substance use disorders.
This position is for a Registered Nurse II in the night shift (7:00 pm - 7:30 am) RN float pool, working 12-hour shifts on a non-rotating Pitman schedule. The role may require overtime and rotating weekend shifts. A consecutive 4-week New Employee Orientation is required, with training hours from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm (Orientation Week 1) and as scheduled by the Nurse Educator for Weeks 2-4, including some night shifts.
Responsibilities
- Provide advanced nursing care for patients with psychiatric disorders in accordance with hospital policies, nursing standards, and regulations.
- Safely implement the use of Seclusion/Restraints, including knowledge of physical and emotional risk factors for patients.
- Plan, implement, and evaluate patient care utilizing knowledge of pharmacology, psychiatric and physical disorders, and cultural needs.
- Demonstrate clinical knowledge and serve as a resource to staff.
- Delegate, supervise, and evaluate nursing processes to address complex problems.
- Adhere to psychosocial rehabilitation and recovery models.
Requirements
- Current and in good standing Registered Nurse license to practice in Virginia (or license-eligible; multi-state compact endorsement accepted).
- Valid driver’s license, maintained in good standing throughout employment.
- Knowledge of nursing theory and practice, including psychiatric nursing.
- Effective interpersonal communication skills and a professional, team-focused approach.
- Completion of BLS, Therapeutic Options (TO), and other required facility training upon employment.
- Experience working as a Registered Nurse.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience as a Registered Nurse in psychiatric, healthcare, acute care, long-term, or correctional settings.
- Bilingual fluency in Spanish and English.
- Veteran or National Service experience.

Additional Information
