Registered Nurse II (Days)

Up to a $25,000 bonus for Registered Nurses new to state service who remain with the facility for 2 years: a $15,000 sign-on bonus (one-year agreement) plus a $10,000 retention bonus paid after one year (one-year agreement for hires after December 10, 2023).

Pay

Hiring range: $87,373 - $120,575 (Pay Band 5). Competitive shift differentials:

  • 1st shift weekend: +$5.50/hour
  • 2nd shift weekday: +$5.50/hour; weekend/holidays: +$6.00/hour
  • 3rd shift weekday: +$4.00/hour; weekend/holidays: +$7.00/hour

Schedule

  • Day shift: 7:00 am – 7:30 pm, 12-hour shifts on a non-rotating Pitman schedule
  • Overtime may be required
  • Weekends and holidays on a rotating basis
  • 4-week New Employee Orientation: Week 1 – 8:00 am – 5:00 pm; Weeks 2–4 – as scheduled by the Nurse Educator (includes some day shift)

About the role

The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) supports individuals by promoting recovery, self-determination, and wellness. This position is located at Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute (SVMHI), a 72-bed, Joint Commission-accredited state mental health facility in Danville, VA. DBHDS operates 12 facilities across Virginia, providing structured, intensive services for individuals with mental illness, intellectual disability, or substance use disorders.

Responsibilities

  • Provide advanced nursing care for patients with psychiatric disorders in accordance with hospital policies, procedures, and nursing standards
  • Safely implement the use of Seclusion/Restraints, including knowledge of physical and emotional risk factors of patients
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate care utilizing knowledge of pharmacology, psychiatric and physical disorders, and cultural needs
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal communication skills, team-focused care, and a professional approach
  • Delegate, supervise, and evaluate nursing processes to help solve complex problems
  • Serve as a clinical resource to staff

Requirements

  • Current and in good standing Registered Nurse license to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia (or license-eligible; multi-state compact endorsement accepted)
  • Valid driver’s license, maintained in good standing throughout employment
  • Knowledge of nursing theory and practice, including psychiatric nursing and psychosocial rehabilitation/recovery models
  • Completion of BLS, Therapeutic Options (TO), and other required facility training upon employment
  • Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate care for psychiatric patients

Qualifications

  • Experience working as a Registered Nurse
  • Experience in a psychiatric, healthcare, acute care, long-term, or correctional setting (preferred)
  • Bilingual fluency in Spanish and English (preferred)
  • Veterans and individuals with National Service experience (encouraged to apply)
