Registered Nurse - Hourly Substitute - As Needed

Hourly, as-needed substitute position for the 2026-27 school year. 7.5 hours per day.

Purpose

The Registered Nurse assesses student health needs; develops emergency care plans and individual health plans with parent and physician input; complies with laws related to student health, including parental consent; provides care for ill, medically fragile, and injured students; offers health information and serves as a resource to teachers, staff, and administrators; and identifies health problems for referral.

This position reports to the Assistant Superintendent of Equity and Student Services.

Responsibilities

• Administers first aid, medication, and specialized medical treatments (e.g., oral suctioning, catheterization, defibrillator) to provide appropriate care for ill, medically fragile, and/or injured children.
• Administers mandated screenings (e.g., vision, dental, hearing, health screenings) to refer medical conditions and/or provide appropriate care.
• Assesses situations involving students' safety, abuse, and other health-related issues to identify problems, refer for treatment, and comply with legal requirements.
• Collaborates with parents, students, health care providers, and/or public agencies to promote and secure student health services, provide information, and comply with legal requirements.
• Conducts age-appropriate programs and activities (e.g., health education, nutritional workshops) to support classroom curriculum and established lesson plans.
• Develops and oversees the implementation of individual student care plans to address health needs, provide direction to site personnel, and implement physician orders with parent input.
• Maintains contact with parents/guardians, physicians, and caregivers to advise them of changes in student health and recommend further intervention.
• Maintains students' confidential files and records (e.g., individualized health care plans, agency referrals, accident reports) to comply with legal requirements and professional standards.
• Monitors site assessments (e.g., health issues, student health records, emergency preparedness, crisis plans) to identify issues and provide recommendations for improving safety and accessibility.
• Monitors students with acute and chronic illnesses to assist them in achieving the highest possible functional level.
• Participates in meetings, workshops, and seminars (e.g., interdisciplinary teams, community agency meetings) to gather, convey, and share information on student health needs, service delivery, and educational programs, and to improve skills and knowledge.
• Prepares and submits district, state, and federal reports to ensure information is correct and submitted according to guidelines.
• Provides training on health-related subjects (e.g., CPR, disaster preparedness, child abuse, health education, medication management, policies and procedures, substance abuse, growth and development, food allergies, hygiene) to promote a safe and healthy lifestyle and act as a resource to students, teachers, and staff.
• Refers students requiring additional medical attention to provide required follow-up treatment and services.
• Reports health and safety issues to administrators and appropriate agencies (e.g., suspected child or substance abuse, contagious diseases) to maintain student safety, a positive learning environment, and comply with regulations.
• Researches topics relating to health and medical care (e.g., wellness, nutrition, treatment protocols, childhood diseases) to provide information to staff, students, parents, and the public.
• Responds to emergency medical situations (e.g., severe falls, prescription reactions, bleeding) to ensure appropriate immediate medical attention and follow-up action.
• Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient functioning of the work unit.
