Registered Nurse - Gastroenterology
Frederick Health is seeking a Registered Nurse for Gastroenterology. This is a Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM position.
About the Role
Performs clinical support duties for the providers in a medical practice setting while working at the top of licensure to facilitate patient care. The role of the RN is to effectively and efficiently act as a clinical liaison and resource for Medical Assistants and other clinical staff. The RN will engage patients to assist in coordination of care for continuous high-quality outcomes and functions as the point person to triage patient issues and concerns. The RN promotes and models effective communication to all staff, providers, and patients.
Responsibilities
- Fosters positive relationships between clinical staff and providers, supporting a constructive and professional work environment.
- Provides input to practice manager and medical director with workflow development specific to practice needs.
- Participates in Performance Improvement activities.
- Acts as Preceptor; assists in training and onboarding of staff if needed.
- Able to triage patients over the phone or in person to determine appointment need; assists patients who walk in and need immediate assessment. Engages a provider for any emergency management of a patient’s condition.
- Works collaboratively with the access center to receive urgent patient phone calls; responsible for monitoring and answering urgent phone line.
- Provides one-on-one education for patients related to disease management.
- Serves as a clinical resource for other staff.
- Maintains accurate EHR; includes documentation from outside sources for up-to-date medical records.
- Collaborates with team members to address patient medical concerns, assure quality outcomes, and achieve optimal health maintenance.
- Assists support staff with clinical concerns; assigns tasks to support staff as needed.
- Ensures staff at the appropriate level of licensure complete tasks.
- Works collaboratively with Practice Leadership to guide the support team.
- Communicates directly with patients regarding test results and plan of care within the scope of RN license and expectations of designated Physician Practice protocols.
- Attends staff meetings/in-services.
- Provides clinical coverage as necessary; flexibility in working at other locations as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Current unrestricted Registered Nurse license in the state of Maryland.
- 2-3 years of experience in a medical practice or clinic setting.
- BSN preferred.
- Current CPR certification.
- Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of established standards for patient care.
- Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills toward a diverse patient population.
- Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication.
- Demonstrates leadership skills, decision-making skills, and ability to problem solve.
- Demonstrates knowledge of infection control standards and EOC standards.
- Strong organization skills with the ability to prioritize and multi-task.
- Ability to triage patients in person or over the phone and determine urgent vs. non-urgent and/or emergency needs.
- Must abide by HIPAA law and maintain a high level of confidentiality.
- Excellent computer skills, knowledge of Electronic Medical Records.
- Knowledge in operations of basic medical and emergency equipment.

- Availability and flexibility to work at other locations.
Patient Contact Skills
Must demonstrate and maintain current knowledge and skills in providing appropriate care/contact for patients in the following age groups:
- Neonate (0 thru 30 days)
- Infant (31 thru 12 months)
- Child (13 months thru 12 years)
- Adolescent (13 years thru 17 years)
- Adult (18 years thru 65 years)
- Geriatric (66+ years)
Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status. Possess the ability to interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs.
Physical Demands
- Light Work - Lifting up to 20 pounds on an infrequent basis (less than one lift every three minutes) and/or carrying up to 10 pounds, or requiring walking or standing to a significant degree (about six hours a day).

- Forceful Exertion: The amount of physical effort required to perform a task (such as moving patients).

- Contact Stress: Pressing the body hard on sharp edges can result in placing too much pressure on nerves, tendons, and blood vessels.

Pay
Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Hourly range: $32.89 - $52.00. Non-exempt positions may have shift differential and/or overtime paid, if applicable.
