NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is a 306-bed medical center providing care to residents of eastern Long Island. The facility includes the Knapp Cardiac Care Center, a modern ambulatory surgical pavilion with specialized services such as women's imaging, a sleep laboratory, and bariatric surgery. It operates a Provisional Level 2 Trauma Center, a Primary Stroke Center designated by the New York State Department of Health, and multiple outpatient sites including a wound care center, hemodialysis center, and various primary care and specialty offices.

About the role

The Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department delivers professional nursing care in accordance with physician treatment plans to ensure patient comfort and well-being. Responsibilities include assessing patient needs, planning and implementing treatment, monitoring progress, and collaborating with the interdisciplinary health team. This full-time, night-shift position (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM) requires alternate weekend availability.

Responsibilities

• Collects patient health data by involving the patient, family, and other healthcare providers.
• Performs initial and ongoing assessments based on patient presentation and department policy.
• Records relevant data on the nursing component of the Interdisciplinary Admission Assessment.
• Demonstrates awareness of special needs for diverse age groups, cultures, and patients with disabilities.
• Incorporates discharge planning into the admission process.
• Analyzes assessment data to determine problem identification and expected outcomes.
• Develops and communicates a patient-centered plan of care, integrating cultural, ethnic, and spiritual aspects.
• Implements the plan of care, adapts nursing procedures, and provides patient/family education.
• Monitors patient progress, documents responses, and revises the plan of care as needed.
• Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to meet holistic patient needs.
• Delegates tasks according to the state nurse practice act and caregiver competencies.
• Demonstrates knowledge of drug administration, including incompatibilities, contraindications, and adverse effects.
• Evaluates patient progress toward outcomes and addresses barriers to achievement.
• Participates in quality improvement initiatives and performance appraisals.
• Engages in professional development and maintains knowledge of policies/procedures.
• Orients new employees and contributes to team development.
• Ensures a safe environment and complies with medication policies.

Requirements

• Professional knowledge of nursing theory and practice from an accredited School of Nursing.
• Current New York State license as a Registered Professional Nurse.
• BLS certification (AHA required).
• ACLS certification (for ICU, Float Pool, Emergency Department).
• PALS and TNCC certification (for Emergency Department, within first year).
• CPI and BERT training (for Behavioral Health RNs, within first 6 months).
• TCAR Certification (for SICU, PACU).
• De-escalation training.
• Interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with patients, families, and healthcare providers.
• Analytical ability to assess and solve clinical situations or unit problems.
• Physical ability to frequently lift/carry over 75 lbs, push/pull over 100 lbs, bend, squat, kneel, climb, and reach above shoulders.

Preferred Qualifications

• BSN preferred.
• 1 year of Med Surg experience (for ED RN or Med Surg Float Pool).
• 1 year of ICU/SDU experience (for Critical Care).
• 1 year of critical care experience (for ASU RN).
• PALS certification preferred.
• Certified Ambulatory Perianesthesia (e.g., CAPA) preferred.
• Experience in preoperative, perioperative, or post-anesthesia care.
• Experience with discharge planning and coordination of perioperative patients.
• Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) systems.

Pay

The salary range for this role is $106,916.04 – $138,356.04 annually, depending on experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. This range does not include bonuses, incentive pay, or other forms of compensation.

Schedule

Full-time, night shift: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM, with alternate weekend requirements.
