This role serves as a service line specialist, focusing on one area of expertise within a specific hospital or care site department. The RN Clinical Expanded Role identifies, coordinates, and evaluates projects and assignments related to their specialty, providing clinical expertise, consultation, education, and research. This position acts as a change agent and assumes a clinical leadership role.

Responsibilities

  • Provides expertise in specialty areas; participates in clinical programs and policy development; supports standardization of care protocols.
  • Educates and mentors nursing staff and other healthcare professionals on best practices and new developments in the specialty area.
  • Uses research to improve nursing practice and develop care standards.
  • Represents the department on committees and works with the healthcare team to coordinate and optimize patient care.
  • Acts as a consultant and liaison to the healthcare team, patients, families, and the community.
  • Promotes and integrates evidence-based practices into clinical care, staying current with the latest research and advancements in the specialty area.
  • Directs and coordinates the care team; provides or delegates care according to plan and licensure guidelines; manages time, supplies, and resources.
  • Promotes the nursing profession; integrates legal and ethical standards; practices within the scope of licensure, complies with regulatory standards and documentation requirements.
  • Uses assessment data and critical thinking to develop individualized care plans; involves patients, families, and team members.
  • Reviews patient response to interventions; revises care plans as needed based on goal achievement and satisfaction.
  • Focuses on admissions and discharges, identifying and removing barriers that may delay discharge.
  • Collaborates closely with the charge nurse, bedside nurse, and care manager to ensure all discharge milestones are met and patients are discharged safely.
  • Assists in achieving the following KPIs:
    • Decrease in ED to admit times
    • Decrease the number of declined transfers
    • Increase the percentage of patients discharged within two hours
    • Increase the percentage of patients removed from the computer within 15 minutes
    • Decrease Left Without Being Treated Percentage

Requirements

  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of practice.
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution (degree will be verified). RNs hired or promoted into this role must obtain their BSN within four years of their hire or promotion date. If there is an existing education agreement, that agreement will take precedence.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification for Healthcare Providers.
  • Unit-specific certification as required (e.g., ACLS, PALS, etc.). Applicants must either have required additional certifications upon hire or obtain them within a specified timeframe determined by service line and department guidelines.
  • One year of clinical nursing experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in the assigned clinical area.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and guide nursing staff.

Preferred Qualifications

  • RN with 2 years of experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships and communicate effectively with patients, families, and multidisciplinary care teams.
  • Highly organized and skilled at managing multiple priorities simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and clinical decision-making skills with a focus on delivering safe, efficient, and patient-centered care.
  • Previous leadership experience.

Schedule

  • Part-time (20 budgeted hours per week).
  • Monday - Friday, 12:00 pm - 8:00 pm.
  • No nights, weekends, or holidays.
  • Scheduled days will vary.

Pay

$41.20 - $62.17 per hour, dependent upon experience.

Physical Requirements

  • Ongoing need to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, and identify equipment and supplies.
  • Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors requiring verbal communication as well as hearing and understanding spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy, including frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, and medication preparation.
  • Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients, including bending to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment, typically items of varying weights up to and including heavy items.
  • Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment, including pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, often navigating crowded and busy rooms full of equipment and power cords.
  • May be expected to stand in a stationary position for extended periods of time.
