Registered Nurse - Cardiac/Vascular/Thoracic PCU - Nights

About the Role

Join our Progressive Care Unit (PCU) at Methodist Hospital, a 24-bed unit specializing in Cardiac, Vascular, and Thoracic care. You’ll care for patients undergoing TAVR, Mitral Clips, temporary pacers, Convergent procedures, Tricuspid Clips, VATS, Fempop bypass, Carotid surgeries, amputations, aneurysm repairs, and PE EKOS treatments. This is an opportunity to build advanced skills while working with a supportive team in a collaborative environment. We welcome both new graduate and experienced RNs.

Work Schedule: Nights, 7pm to 7am

Responsibilities

• Provide age-specific care to ensure understanding and comfort, following Population Specific Criteria.
• Identify and deliver individualized customer service and patient care based on needs.
• Perform initial and ongoing assessments, including data from patients and significant others, prioritizing based on immediate needs. Use findings in discharge planning.
• Develop, review, revise, and individualize the plan of care to address nursing needs and optimize outcomes. Collaborate with providers and clinical disciplines as needed.
• Provide patient-specific teaching and ensure the care plan reflects continuing care needs or referrals for discharge/transfer.
• Implement interventions safely and consistently with the established plan of care, following nursing protocols and standards. Use current evidence-based knowledge.
• Evaluate patient care to determine response to interventions, monitor outcomes, and document patient responses. Assess patient and family capabilities related to care needs post-dismissal.
• Deliver a complete verbal or written change-of-shift report using SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) and familiarize yourself with the overall plan of care.
• Recognize and address patient and family capabilities and limitations (physical and mental).
• Perform technical skills competently and independently to ensure patient safety. Learn new skills and equipment within specified timeframes.
• Demonstrate correct and safe technique in using equipment according to product information and policy manuals. Follow procedures for obtaining, returning, cleaning, or disposing of equipment and supplies.
• Maintain professional behavior in attitude, demeanor, and interactions to support the organization’s mission. Communicate effectively to solve problems at personal and unit levels.
• Participate in restocking, maintaining a clean environment, and upholding a professional appearance and work environment. Maintain competence in your area of expertise.
• Participate in meetings and/or committees to assist in decisions affecting the unit or organization.
• Initiate actions to correct, prevent, or minimize risks to patients, families, or hospital employees (e.g., falls, needle sticks, patient concerns). Complete appropriate report forms (e.g., variance/incident reports, patient concern reports).
• Work within the scope of practice as defined by the State Nurse Practice Act. Observe precautions when administering hazardous medications or handling excreta from patients who have received such medications.
• Review, delegate, and evaluate plans for appropriate staff utilization according to the state’s Nurse Practice Act and Professional Standards of Practice. Ensure tasks are within scope, routine, non-complex, and have predictable outcomes.
• Act fiscally accountable by using resources responsibly and charging accurately for supplies and equipment.

Requirements

Education:

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN) from an accredited college of nursing required. BSN must be obtained within 5 years from date of hire for nurses with an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
• For MJE Progressive Care: BSN preferred; graduate of an accredited school of nursing required.
• Successful completion of annual mandatory education requirements.
• For NMH Critical Care & MJE Progressive Care: NIH Stroke Scale training or proof of training required within the first 6 months of hire.
• For MJE Progressive Care: Successful completion of Telemetry Cardiac Rhythm Course.

Experience:

• Experience requirements vary by specialty. If not listed, no prior experience is required.
• Experience required for specific units:
  • NMH CT Scan: 1 to 3 years’ experience in direct patient care and proficient in intravenous (IV) start skills.
  • NMH MRI: 1 to 3 years’ experience in direct patient care and proficient in intravenous (IV) start skills.
  • NMH Nuclear Medicine: 5 years’ experience in nursing clinical settings and general experience in all areas of nursing practice.
  • MJE Neurodiagnostics: Minimum 2 years of nursing experience in cardiac/ICU.
  • MWH PACU: Critical Care or Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) experience.
  • NMH PACU: 1 to 2 years nursing experience.
  • NMH Surgery GI Lab: 1 to 2 years experience.
  • NMH Cath Lab: 1 year experience in Cardiac Cath Lab, Cardiac Unit, Emergency Room, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), or Progressive Care unit.
  • NMH Surgery Pre Op Services: 1 to 2 years nursing experience.
  • Surgery OP Support HW: Minimum 2 years related experience in RN role.
  • MFH Radiology Diagnostics: 3 years experience in direct patient care and proficient in IV start skills.
• Experience preferred for specific units:
  • NMH Radiology Surgical: Experience in a surgical environment.
  • MWH Repro Endo Infert: Pre/post operative and circulating experience.
  • MPC Colon & Rectal Surgery ASC: Acute care or surgical nursing experience.
  • MJE Cardiopulmonary Rehab: 1 year of telemetry experience.
  • MFH Radiology Diagnostics: Pre/post operative and circulating experience.

License/Certifications:

• Current valid Nebraska Registered Nurse (RN) License, valid compact multistate license, or a temporary permit while awaiting licensure.
• Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) strongly preferred at time of hire, required within 3 months of hire.
• Current American Heart Association Advanced Cardio Life Support (ACLS) required (timeline varies by unit):
  • NMH Surgery Pre Op Services: ACLS required within 3 months of hire.
  • Surgery OP Support HW: ACLS required within 6 months of hire.
  • MJE Progressive Care: ACLS required within 1 year of hire.
  • MFH Radiology Diagnostics: ACLS required within 3 months of hire.
• Preferred certifications (varies by unit):
  • Certification(s) in area of specialty from National Certification Corporation (NCC) within 1 year of eligibility.
  • NMH Cardiac Unit: Certified Critical Care Nurse (CCRN) or Progressive Care Certified Nurse (PCCN).
  • NMH Cardiovascular Surgery: Certified Critical Care Nurse (CCRN) or Progressive Care Certified Nurse (PCCN).
  • NMH Progressive Care Unit 4: Certified Critical Care Nurse (CCRN) or Progressive Care Certified Nurse (PCCN).
  • Surgery Outpatient HW: Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR).
  • NMH Progressive Care: Gerontological Nursing (GERO.BC) and Progressive Care Certified Nurse (PCCN).
  • NMH Surgery GI Lab: Certified Gastroenterology Registered Nurse (CGRN).
  • NMH PACU: Certified Post Anesthesia Nurse (CPAN).
  • NMH Cath Lab: Cardiovascular Registered Nurse (CV.BC) within 3 years of hire.
  • NMH Critical Care: Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN).
