About the role
The school nurse works within the public school system and assists with other city programs as assigned. Responsibilities include providing nursing services to promote a healthy school community, minimize absences, and support the well-being of school children.
Responsibilities
- Health assessment, medical treatment, and health counseling of students
- Medication administration
- Development, implementation, and evaluation of individualized medication administration care plans and health care plans
- Collaboration with health care providers and school personnel regarding student health
- Emergency care for injuries or sudden illness
- Implementation of Massachusetts Department of Public Health mandated programs (health screenings, immunization surveillance)
- Referral of students with health problems to appropriate resources
- Maintenance of comprehensive and cumulative health records using Aspen X2
- Collection and reporting of public health/school health activities
- Health promotion within the school and community
- Prevention and control of communicable diseases in schools
- Reporting and investigation of communicable diseases per state regulations
- Assistance with staffing immunization clinics
- Education of school personnel on sanitary standards and universal precautions
- Ordering medical and support supplies for school nurse offices
- Periodic recertification in CPR and First Aid, and maintaining continuing education credits for RN license and DOE certification
- Assistance with other public health or school nurse-related duties as assigned
Requirements
- Current Registered Nurse License
- Current CPR and First Aid Certification from a recognized provider
- Effective and tactful communication with staff, students, and parents
- Knowledge of safety procedures, department policies, and emergency protocols
Physical Demands & Working Environment
- Significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing
- Kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; significant fine finger dexterity
- Sitting (40% of the day), walking, and standing (30% of the day)
- Minimal temperature variations; generally hazard-free environment
Pay
$38.85 – $45.04 hourly
Schedule
35 hours per week, Monday through Friday
