Registered Nurse
Position Summary
Registered Nurses (RNs) provide direct nursing care to inmate patients, applying the nursing process—assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation—in accordance with professional nursing standards. RNs collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure effective patient care and desired health outcomes. Correctional nurses deliver care to promote and improve overall health, often managing a patient population that has had limited access to healthcare prior to incarceration. This role allows RNs to care for a wide range of conditions, from minor ailments to complex medical or behavioral health issues.
Qualifications
Minimum Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
Minimum Work Experience: Clinical experience as a Registered Nurse
Minimum License: Current, unrestricted RN license in the state of employment (maintain a current copy on file at all times)
Job Responsibilities
Deliver individualized nursing care to inmate patients according to nursing protocols
Perform assessments in various correctional settings, including intake, health care units, emergency situations, chronic care clinics, and medical units
Collaborate with primary care providers and interdisciplinary teams to ensure timely, appropriate, and continuous care
Administer medications, treatments, and therapeutic interventions as prescribed
Monitor and report reactions to treatments, medications, and changes in physical or emotional status
Provide patient education, including medication guidance, self-care instructions, and discharge planning
Maintain accurate, timely, and complete patient documentation in appropriate formats
Promote a therapeutic and professional environment for inmates
Adhere to infection control policies, medication administration standards, and regulatory guidelines
Participate in ongoing staff development, training, and quality improvement initiatives
Perform additional duties as assigned based on facility needs

Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification
Functional Demands
Ability to pass all required health and security screenings
May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays
On-call availability may be required

Maintain required security clearance for the assigned facility
