Registered Nurse Adult Psych Acute Care

About the role

Department: Behavioral Health Unit. Location: St Joseph Medical Center, Kansas City, MO. Make a meaningful impact every day. As a Behavioral Health Registered Nurse, you'll provide compassionate, hands‑on care to patients with acute mental health needs in a dynamic inpatient behavioral health setting. Working alongside an interdisciplinary care team, you'll play a key role in promoting patient safety, stabilization, and recovery.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct nursing care to patients with acute mental and behavioral health needs in an inpatient setting.
• Observe, monitor, and document patient behavior, mental status, and safety risks.
• Assist with crisis intervention and de‑escalation to promote unit safety.
• Collaborate with RNs, providers, and the interdisciplinary care team to treat and educate patients about mental and medical conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients and/or family members.
• Help manage therapeutic groups, psychiatric crisis intervention, seclusion and restraint of patients.
• Record patients' medical histories and symptoms, and help perform diagnostic tests and analyze results.
• Administer treatment and medications, and help with patient follow‑up and rehabilitation.
• Consult patients and their families on managing illness or injury, diet and exercise programs, and self‑administration of medication and physical therapy.

Qualifications

• Must have a current and valid state license as a Registered Nurse.
• Current BLS certificate upon hire and must maintain it.
• Working knowledge of Mental Health Laws and practice standards.
• Working knowledge of interdisciplinary treatment team process, behavioral health programming, and daily nursing functions for inpatient and outpatient behavioral health units.
• Working knowledge of the continuum of care for behavioral health care.
