Registered Nurse 1 (NY HELPS)
About the Role
The RN 1 serves as a member of the interdisciplinary team performing various nursing duties, including coordinating and monitoring all aspects of medical care for residents.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct nursing care to residents, including comprehensive nursing assessments, administering medications, implementing physician’s treatment orders, transcribing orders, and collecting specimens for laboratory analysis or culture.
- Provide health education to residents, their guardians, and staff and participate in interdisciplinary support plan meetings.
- Represent nursing on the resident’s support team, provide information on nursing needs, consult and coordinate with support teams and other health care disciplines to assess, plan, implement, or evaluate resident’s care.
- Provide first aid and emergency nursing care.
- Assess, monitor, and document resident’s symptoms, conditions, and care, including diet and physical activity.
- Identify and report resident’s responses to medications or changes in health status.
- Monitor resident’s medication, ensuring medications are ordered and available for administration.
- Meet documentation standards regarding transcribing physician’s orders, nursing progress notes, health charts, and support plans.
- Act as a liaison to community providers to ensure continuity of care, follow up with community providers when necessary, and advocate for resident’s needs.
- Participate in discharge planning by securing community appointments to ensure continuity of care.
- Prepare and maintain accurate and detailed reports electronically using Excel and/or Word.
- Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment.
Requirements
- Licensed and currently registered to practice nursing in New York State. Must maintain a valid New York State license and registration.
For transfer candidates: One year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service in this title or in a title eligible for 70.1 transfer.
For open-to-the-public candidates: This title is part of the New York Hiring Emergency Limited Placement Statewide program (NY HELPS). Candidates must meet the NY HELPS minimum qualifications.
Pay
Posted hiring salary: $96,147–$105,138. Includes the statutory hiring rate for PS&T Grade 18 and a $20,000 geographic differential.
Additional compensation may apply depending on the candidate’s training and experience.
Employees hired for the evening shift (2 pm – 10 pm) qualify for a 7% shift differential and $575 inconvenience pay.

Evening shift: 2 pm – 10 pm.
Background Investigation
All prospective employees will undergo a criminal background check (CBC), including State and federal criminal history record checks. Convictions must be reported; certain convictions may bar appointment or result in removal after appointment. Each case will be determined on its own merits.
Prospective employees will be fingerprinted and screened against the Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR). Fees may apply.
For Division of Juvenile Justice and Opportunities for Youth (DJJOY) appointees, a check against the Staff Exclusion List (SEL) will be conducted. Those found responsible for serious or repeated acts of abuse or neglect will be barred from appointment.
