About the Role
The Regional Medical Director (RMD) is a hybrid role operating as both a clinical provider (0.50 FTE) and clinical leader (0.5 FTE) providing clinical and operational leadership in their respective region. The RMD, in accordance with guidance from the Chief Medical Officer, has primary responsibility for providing management, supervision, support, and development of designated staff, including clinical directors, and is accountable for their day-to-day performance as clinical and operational leaders. The RMD partners with clinic practice managers to ensure the highest degree of quality care, patient and provider satisfaction, and operational excellence.
The RMD operates at the operational/tactical level collaboratively with other clinical and operations leaders and is responsible for supporting provider interviewing, hiring, and assignment; leader and provider development; IT/EMR enablement; and clinical quality and operational process improvement initiatives.
Responsibilities
Regional Medical Director (50%)
- Consistently and effectively communicates organizational goals, values, and key messages, ensuring seamless and unified information flow throughout the team; actively participates in and leads relevant clinical and operational meetings.
- Directs the clinical and programmatic components of the CHC medical division to meet continuous performance improvement, customer service, programmatic growth, and financial requirements supporting CHC’s mission.
- Collaborates with the leadership team to develop and implement annual operational plans for each clinic, including regular report-outs and clinic reviews.
- Oversees all functions related to clinical services in collaboration with the Chief Medical Officer, Medical Operations Director, and other leaders to maintain high-quality clinical care, patient/provider experience, and operational excellence.
- Manages clinical leader and provider performance issues and professional development within their designated region; supports continuing education and training programs.
- Participates in and leads quality improvement and utilization management programs; drives clinical, operational, and quality improvement activities.
- Serves as mentor and coach to EHR Champions across all sites; ensures providers are trained in efficient EHR use and partners with the Chief Information Officer on IT/EMR-related improvements.
- Works collaboratively with the Executive Leadership Team to achieve business and strategic goals.
- Reviews, analyzes, and evaluates financial and statistical information and productivity reports; prepares and distributes data and presentations to appropriate audiences.
- Develops clinic budgets with Executive and Medical Leadership to ensure effective financial management.
- Adheres to attendance standards to perform job functions.
Clinical Provider (50%)
- Performs all duties and responsibilities of a Physician, PA, or ARNP according to applicable credentials and privileging.

Qualifications
Education
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) from an accredited School of Medicine or Osteopathy, or Physician Assistant (PA) or Registered Nurse Practitioner with a master’s degree or post-Master’s Certificate as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP).
- Completion of an accredited residency program in area of practice (e.g., family medicine, internal medicine, or pediatrics).
- Preferred: Education and training in specialized care such as family practice, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, and prenatal; formal education and training in leadership and management.
Experience
- 5 years of experience as a practicing clinician.
- 2 years of clinical supervisory/management experience as a medical director, clinic director, or equivalent.
- Experience working in a primary care, multi-site, multi-provider medical practice.
- Preferred: Familiarity with federally qualified health centers (FQHC) or similar healthcare settings; experience in not-for-profit healthcare; experience serving low-income, multi-ethnic populations; experience leading process improvement, quality improvement, or CQI initiatives in primary care.
Credentials
- Physician license (MD/DO) with the State of Washington or Physician Assistant (PA)/Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) license with prescriptive privileges in Washington.
- Board eligible/Board certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) in Family Practice, Internal Medicine, or Pediatrics (must be obtained within one year of hire) or PA certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) or ARNP certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).
- DEA controlled substances registration.
- Hospital privileges (if applicable) – must be obtained within 60 days of employment.
- Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (CPR/AED) certification.
- Successful completion of CHC’s credentialing/privileging review upon hire and recredentialing as appropriate.
- Preferred: Leadership certification/accreditation (e.g., ACHE, CPE, CAPPM, CMPE); membership in MGMA, AMGA, or other relevant professional organizations; board certification or eligibility in Addiction Medicine.
Other
- Verified immunity to measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), and varicella (chickenpox), demonstrated through vaccination records or titer results.
- Preferred: Bilingual skills.
