Responsibilities
- Manage the day-to-day safety operations of the region/location and provide leadership and support to managers in ensuring safety standards are met
- Develop, implement, direct, and monitor safety initiatives to promote and create a safe working environment
- Uncover and promote growth and continuous improvement opportunities to safety
- Direct and facilitate accident investigation process, root cause analysis & follow-up for motor vehicle and industrial situations and oversee closure of corrective actions
- Plan and administer departmental budget and maintain cost effectiveness
- Conduct ongoing health & safety inspections of facilities, operations, equipment, and processes to ensure compliance of Corporate Safety, environmental, and governmental (DOT, OSHA, local agencies) policies and regulations
- Maintain a close working relationship with Human Resources and Worker’s Compensation administration
- Interact daily with sub-contracted employees and services to ensure DOT compliance where applicable
- Work cross-functionally to develop safety programs and awareness
- Analyze data trends to create action plans for region
- Lead and conduct thorough incident investigations, provide coaching, training, and technical support to facility safety personnel and field-based employees
- Review trends create strategic plans for improvement
- Provide leadership and exhibit professional conduct and open communication with internal and external customers
- Formulate short- and long-term goals and region action plans with the Area Safety Manager and the Regional Vice President
- Serve as the primary subject matter expert and point of contact for regulatory agencies during inspections, inquiries, and reporting
- Prepare and present reports as necessary
- Ensure compliance with ELDT, Smith System, defensive driving, and required training
- Manage and mentor a team of site-level safety professionals, providing guidance, professional development, and performance management
Requirements
- Ability to travel frequently within assigned region
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent computer skills; proficient in Windows and Microsoft applications; Power BI is a plus
- Proven track record of successful project and personnel management as well as leading teams to meet/exceed goals
- Strong planning/organizational and time management skills
- Knowledge of the waste industry and hauling operations is preferred
- Experience & Knowledge Needed For Position: Waste industry experience is a plus; Understanding of DOT and OSHA requirements is required; 5+ years experience in keeping detailed and accurate records in a safety environment; 5+ years experience in reading & interpreting federal, state and local Safety regulations; Must possess strong planning/organizational and time management skills; Knowledge of the waste industry and hauling operations is preferred; Experience & Knowledge Needed For Position: Waste industry experience is a plus; Understanding of DOT and OSHA requirements is required; 5+ years experience in keeping detailed and accurate records in a safety environment; 5+ years experience in reading & interpreting federal, state and local Safety regulations
- Must have a strong background in dealing with people under difficult circumstances
- OSHA 500 Certification required
- OSHA 30 hour Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, or Business (preferred)
- Strong knowledge of OSHA standards, DOT/FMCSA regulations, Workers Compensation processes

Physical Requirements
- Occasionally lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 35 lbs
- Rarely lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 50 lbs
- Frequently working outside in changing temperatures, wet/humid conditions
- Frequently working in areas of dust, odors, mist, gases, and other airborne matter
- Rarely stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling
- Rarely climbing and/or balancing
- Continuously sitting/standing/walking
Additional Working Conditions/Aspects
- Exposure to high traffic conditions and/or tight driving areas
- Exposure to residential and commercial waste
- Able to work flexible hours; expected to work nights and weekends as needed
- Able to work overtime, weekends, and/or holidays
- Must be available for 24-hour emergency calls
- Must successfully complete pre-employment testing
- Must be able to read and speak the English language
