Refining Inspector

About the role

Marathon Petroleum Company’s Kenai Refinery is currently seeking a full-time Refinery Inspector for the Inspection Group in the Maintenance Department. This position is essential for supporting fixed equipment integrity related issues on process equipment and piping.

Responsibilities

• Performs and/or coordinates fixed equipment inspections, including process equipment and piping, required by site mechanical integrity and inspection programs.
• Develops and executes inspection plans/life cycle management for refining equipment based on service, design, condition, jurisdictional requirements, temporary repairs and equipment replacements, Turnaround (TAR) dates, and inspection history.
• Prioritizes and plans work within the respective assigned area team.
• Provides scope and supporting documentation (justification, timing, preparations, etc.), for fixed equipment mechanical integrity related work to Maintenance (Routine, Major Maintenance, Turnarounds, etc.).
• Documents inspection records, findings, and recommendations in Marathon’s Inspection Data Management System (IDMS).
• Completes all required documentation and interprets and applies industry and Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practice (RAGAGEP) codes and specifications.
• Develops, revises, and maintains comprehensive inspection procedures, applicable guidelines, and work instructions.
• Understands critical process variables that affect equipment reliability, identifies gaps, and leads gap closure effort.
• Generates and provides repair/upgrade recommendations based on findings, options, and risk assessments in conjunction with area team and other departments on-site.
• Program Manager for special emphasis projects supporting site mechanical integrity program.
• Reviews and applies Management of Change (MOC) requirements and ensures all Process Safety Management (PSM) elements are implemented.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• API 510 and API 570 certifications.
• Minimum of three (3) years inspection experience in Fixed Equipment, Reliability &/or Maintenance in a refinery, petro-chemical or other heavy related industry.
• Familiarity with Risk Based Inspection (RBI) strategy based on API-580/581.
• Proficiency in Microsoft: Word, Excel and Outlook.
• Ability to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator), physically perform all tasks in the field, take hair drug test, and pass physical.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Steady employment history.
• Ability to obtain a TWIC Card.
• Legal authorization to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.
• Travel requirement is 5% or less.
• Monday-Thursday schedule from 7 AM - 5:30 PM, with after-hours calls required several times a year and support of TAR every 3 years.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Associate degree in Mechanical Technology, Corrosion Technology, Welding Technology, or Non-Destructive Technology (NDT) is preferred.
• API 653, 571, 580, and/or 581 certifications are preferred.
• CWI/AWS/SW certifications are preferred.
• ANST Level II (UTT, RTFI, MT, PT) certifications are preferred.
• More than three (3) or more years of experience as a refinery inspector working with industry-related codes is preferred.
• Extensive experience and understanding of RBI inspection strategies based on API-580/581 is preferred.
• Experience with IDMS software such as APM and RBMI is preferred.
