About the role
The State Hygienic Laboratory (Iowa’s Environmental and Public Health Laboratory), at the University of Iowa, is seeking a Microbiology Supervisor to join their team in the Coralville, Iowa facility. This position supervises laboratory testing of clinical specimens or isolates for disease diagnosis and treatment or surveillance.
Responsibilities
- Ensure assigned sections function under best laboratory practices and comply with CLIA regulations or other regulatory agency requirements.
- Ensure assigned staff adhere to all laboratory safety and security policies.
- May be required to work irregular hours including holidays, weekends, and on-call coverage.
Requirements
- A master’s degree in molecular biology, Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- Three to five years of clinical or public health laboratory experience.
- Experience with molecular biology method validation and/or development, such as real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), genotyping, and DNA variant identification.
- One year experience providing project oversight and preparing successful grants and manuscripts.
- One year experience with laboratory research and data analysis.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Desirable Qualifications
- PhD degree in Molecular Biology, Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related field.
- One year experience in molecular test validation and quality control.
- Experience presenting data at national meetings, particularly related to newborn screening.
- Training or teaching experience.
- Experience leading teams.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office, LIS, and preparation of fiscal and operational reports.
Qualifications
- Education or equivalency required: Master’s degree in molecular biology, Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Pay and Compensation
Pay Grade: 5A
