Recycling Attendant (Part-time)

About the role
The purpose of this classification is to operate the recycling convenience center, including evaluating materials brought into the facility, directing customers to appropriate bins, receiving payments, operating compactors, cleaning areas around bins, and performing related tasks.
Responsibilities
- Opens and closes recycling convenience center facilities each day following established procedures; locks/unlocks buildings/gates, activates/de-activates alarm system, and unlocks safe; reports problems to supervisor.
- Performs customer service functions; provides assistance and information related to department facilities, services, fees, procedures, or other issues; responds to routine questions, complaints, or requests for service; researches problems and initiates resolution.
- Evaluates materials brought into the recycling convenience center to determine acceptance; provides guidelines and information on solid waste disposal and facility operations; explains disposal options for hazardous, toxic, or non-disposable materials; directs customers with non-disposable materials to landfill or elsewhere as appropriate.
- Directs customers in proper separation of refuse and disposal procedures; counts number of bags deposited and calculates charges; monitors activities to ensure placement of materials into appropriate bins; retrieves inappropriate items from bins; notifies vendors of full bins and maintains records of material transport.
- Receives money in payment of facility fees; records transactions, issues receipts, counts and balances money; ensures security of revenues; prepares bank deposits.
- Operates compactors to compact refuse; monitors operations and condition of compactors to identify potential problems.
- Performs cleaning and maintenance tasks; cleans spilled liquids and garbage on facility grounds; cleans and disinfects bins, tanks, and containers contaminated with oil, leachate, or residue; keeps building and work area swept, organized, and clean; performs minor building repairs.
- Prepares and maintains records of work activities; prepares reports of daily cash receipts, customer volume, and hours worked by community service workers.
- Operates equipment and tools associated with work activities, including compactors, cash registers, safes, telephones, vacuum cleaners, mops, shovels, rakes, brooms, sprayers, mechanic tools, or carpentry tools.
- Completes various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, receipts, daily transaction reports, customer counts, bank deposit slips, time sheets, or other documents.
- Communicates with supervisor, employees, community service workers, vendors, customers, and the public to coordinate work activities, review status, exchange information, or resolve problems.
- Assists in monitoring activities of community service workers; provides training as needed; monitors work progress and inspects completed work.
- Performs general or clerical tasks, including answering telephone calls, posting signs on full bins, transporting mail or documentation, or performing light cleaning/housekeeping.
- Provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Two months of previous experience and/or training involving recycling center operations, general office work, customer service, or general maintenance work; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Benefits
- Personal leave accrual at half the rate of full-time employees:
- 0–4 years: 3.08 hours per pay period
- 5–14 years: 3.85 hours per pay period
- 15+ years: 4.62 hours per pay period
