Recreation Therapist

About the role

The Recreation Therapist plans, organizes, and supervises recreational activities to promote healthy leisure, socialization, and skill development for youth in a human services setting.

Responsibilities

• Develops diverse programs including arts, sports, and community outings aligned with treatment plans.
• Supervises recreation facilities ensuring safety, performs maintenance, and manages risk.
• Documents progress, participates in treatment team meetings, and provides feedback on service plans.
• Supervises activities for up to three youth and assists in event planning.

Requirements

• A bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation or related field.
• At least one year of youth recreation experience.
• OMH-funded roles require a CTRS credential.
• CPR certification.
• Valid NYS driver’s license; may require Lifeguard certification.

• Focus on ethical conduct.
• Skills in youth engagement, conflict resolution, and de-escalation techniques.
