Job Overview

The City of El Cajon is seeking music instructors to teach beginning, intermediate, and advanced level classes to children. The ideal candidate should have strong experience in guitar and/or ukulele.

About the Role

This position requires the ability to perform a full range of duties as assigned, working independently and exercising judgment and initiative. The position works closely with the Recreation Supervisor to ensure the success of programs through preparation, execution, and evaluation.

Responsibilities

  • Directing and supervising participants of the Recreation programs
  • Plans, organizes, and instructs classes in their area of specialization within established guidelines
  • Maintains records pertinent to programs
  • Implements age-appropriate activities and events
  • Ensures the health, welfare, and safety of the participants of the program
  • Working closely with the Recreation Supervisor to ensure the success of programs through preparation, execution, and evaluation
  • Absorbing new or unusual situations and adjusting accordingly
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with parents, community center staff, and other key individuals
  • Maintaining a fun and positive attitude daily to create a happy environment for participants

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of recreational activities
  • Ability to be creative and innovative with recreation programs
  • Possess excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to work with children and/or adults and give effective guidance to participants
  • Ability to provide the necessary support to ensure the health and well-being of all participants and staff
  • Ability to take direction as well as have the ability to take initiative
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Communicate clearly, concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Possess basic computer skills
  • Requires a flexible work schedule that may require morning and evening hours, as well as weekends and holidays

Qualification Guidelines

  • Education: Completion of or currently attending high school. College-level courses in recreation, education, physical education, or related field is desired. Additional training in area of specialization related to music.
  • Experience: Some experience with recreation programming and leading activities for children is desired. In addition, candidate must have some experience in their area of specialization. Experience including background in guitar and ukulele is recommended. Strong interpersonal skills and a desire to work with participants of all ages is required.

Special Requirements

  • Ability to obtain a CPR card and First Aid Certificate
  • May be required to provide means to commute between work sites in course of work, including the use of personal vehicle during assigned shifts
  • May be required to possess or have the ability to obtain, prior to employment, a valid Class C California driver's license with a safe driving record
  • Ability to lift and move up to 20 lbs
