Job Overview
The City of El Cajon is seeking a Recreation Specialist II to teach art classes to children and adults.
About the Role
This position requires the ability to perform a full range of duties as assigned, working independently and exercising judgment and initiative. The ideal candidate should have prior related experience and enjoy working with a team.
Responsibilities
- Directing and supervising participants of the Recreation programs
- Plans, organizes, and instructs classes in their area of specialization within established guidelines
- Maintains records pertinent to programs
- Implements age-appropriate activities and events
- Ensures the health, welfare, and safety of the participants of the program
- Works closely with the Recreation Supervisor to ensure the success of programs
- Assists staff in organizing and cleaning facility areas and equipment
- Establishes and maintains relationships with parents, community center staff and other key individuals
- Possess basic computer skills
- Maintain a fun and positive attitude daily to create a happy environment for participants
Requirements
- Knowledge of recreational activities
- Ability to be creative and innovative with recreation programs
- Possess excellent customer service and communication skills
- Ability to work with children and/or adults and give effective guidance to participants
- Ability to provide the necessary support to ensure the health and well-being of all participants and staff
- Strong interpersonal skills and a desire to work with participants of all ages
- Ability to obtain a CPR card and First Aid Certificate
Qualifications
- Education: Completion of high school, college-level courses in recreation, education, physical education, or related field, and additional training in area of specialization related to art and/or early childhood development is desired.
- Experience: Some experience with recreation programming and leading activities for children and/or adults is desired. Candidate must have some experience in their area of specialization, including background in a variety of art media's, and/or early childhood development is recommended. Strong interpersonal skills and a desire to work with participants of all ages is required.
Desired Skills/Qualifications
- Ability to obtain a CPR card and First Aid Certificate
- May be required to provide means to commute between work sites in course of work, including the use of personal vehicle during assigned shifts
- May be required to possess or have the ability to obtain, prior to employment, a valid Class C California driver's license with a safe driving record
- Ability to lift and move up to 20 lbs
