The Recreation Specialist operates and supervises the administration and professional work involved in programming, directing, and leading city-wide Adult and Youth athletic programs, as well as other recreation events and activities as assigned.

Responsibilities

• Plan, direct, organize, and supervise Adult and Youth sports leagues, tournaments, individual athletics, and programs for the City of Cheyenne.
• Develop policies and procedures for assigned activities.
• Plan, oversee, and complete activity registration; coordinate and schedule leagues, tournaments, and appropriate facilities; visit activity sites.
• Promote all Adult and Youth activities by assisting in writing press releases, designing flyers, appearing on radio or television, and ensuring effective marketing.
• Aid in overall facility maintenance, operation, and control.
• Provide reports on attendance, scheduling, participant complaints, and program evaluations.
• Assist the Recreation Manager in renewing and updating contracts for independently contracted user groups.
• Maintain leagues and tournaments that generate revenue, meeting budget and fee collection goals.
• Work directly with the School District and Kiwanis Community House to schedule facilities for Adult and Youth activities.
• Work cooperatively with Volleyball Officials and Softball Umpires to ensure contract stipulations are met.
• Assist in Department or Division-wide special events, including Superday.
• Transfer and set up light to heavy supplies and equipment in support of assigned activities.
• Maintain, approve, and submit payroll time sheets monthly; monitor total hours worked.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as required.

Requirements

• One year of increasingly responsible recreation athletic administration experience.
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in recreation, physical education, or a related field (preferred).
• Must be available for on-call hours during programs and weekend hours.

• Knowledge of operations, services, and activities of a city-wide recreation athletic program.
• Methods and techniques of sound public relations.
• Operational characteristics of various athletic equipment and tools.
• Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
• Sports rules, regulations, and procedures, including tournament and league bracketing.
• Advanced knowledge of computer programs.
• Ability to provide lead supervision and guidance to assigned staff.
• Maintain a variety of records and reports.
• Interpret, explain, and enforce policies and procedures.
• Operate a variety of recreation equipment safely and effectively.
• Work independently in the absence of supervision.
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials and the public.

Physical Requirements

• Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception for observations, communication, reading, and writing.
• Physical condition necessary for operating assigned equipment, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending or sitting for prolonged periods, and lifting up to 30 pounds.
• Maintain mental capacity for making sound decisions and demonstrating intellectual capabilities.

Working environment: Mostly office environment; irregular work hours; exposure to inclement weather.

Pay

$51,025 to $71,435 Annually
