About the role

The Missouri Department of Corrections is seeking a Recreation Officer III to lead a comprehensive recreation program that supports the physical and emotional rehabilitation of offenders.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, and implements a variety of sports and recreational activities.
  • Consults with recreation and custody personnel to develop and implement recreation activities.
  • Schedules and secures approval for activities, music groups, and other programs.
  • Supervises, evaluates, and directs recreation and other staff assigned to the recreation program.
  • Provides in-service training for facility employees assisting in recreation activities.
  • Collaborates with community groups, the general public, facility superintendent, and other staff members to formulate and implement special and regular recreation and entertainment activities.
  • Prepares recreational budgets, requests for purchase of equipment, and ensures proper maintenance of facilities.
  • Maintains cleanliness and appearance of recreation areas.
  • Performs other related work as assigned.

Requirements

  • One or more years of experience as a Recreation Officer II with the Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System.
  • Seven or more years of experience, excluding volunteer experience, in the field of group recreation or physical education, with responsibility for organizing, implementing, scheduling, and/or overseeing recreation activities.
  • One or more years with responsibility for budgeting, purchasing, and supervision of staff.

Qualifications

  • Earned credit hours from an accredited college or university, with credit hours in recreation, physical education, leisure studies, or closely related field, may be substituted for up to four years of the required experience, at a rate of 30 credit hours for one year – a minimum of three years of experience, including one year of budgeting, purchasing, and supervisory experience is required.

Pay

  • A $2.00 per hour shift differential if working shifts between 12:00pm and 5:00am at a 24/7 congregate care facility.
  • A $0.75 per hour medium security or $1.50 maximum security differential if working full-time at a qualifying facility.
  • A $1.00 per hour restrictive housing differential if assigned to a regular post within a restrict housing/segregation unit.

  • The position requires a flexible schedule to accommodate the needs of the offender population.
