About the role
This position supports the Military's Quality of Life programs within the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) department of Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC). The MWR department provides fitness, recreation, lodging, and food and beverage programs for service members, their families, retired military, and civilian employees. This role is assigned to the Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF) Fitness, Sports, and Deployed Support Branch under Fleet Readiness at CNIC, Naval Base Kitsap - Bangor.
Responsibilities
- Administrative Support:
- Provide information to walk-in and telephone customers regarding facility hours, upcoming special events, and programs.
- Verify patron eligibility to ensure authorized use of recreation facilities, resources, and equipment.
- Use Point of Sales (POS) systems to collect fees for sales, fees, retail and rental items, and classes.
- Assist in planning, scheduling, and publicizing activities; maintain related supplies to attract and motivate participants.
- Oversee the sale of retail items associated with activities.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of ongoing MWR fitness activities based on participant responses, resources, and program objectives.
- Monitor patrons, volunteers, and contractors at assigned programs/events and report issues to management.
- Assist in selecting fitness, sports, and aquatics activities to be offered, considering participant interests and needs.
- Instructional Support:
- Monitor assigned participants in indoor and outdoor activities, including intramural sporting events.
- Perform basic fitness orientation; identify and correct unsafe fitness techniques.
- Demonstrate procedures common to activities and instruct in the use of related equipment.
- Establish/review schedules of events; conduct tours; set up/prepare gymnasiums, facilities, and playing fields prior to scheduled events (e.g., lap swim, lifeguard training, exercise programs, races, pool parties, sporting events).
- Ensure adherence to regulations and safety procedures.
- Facility/Equipment Maintenance:
- Ensure facilities and sporting fields are opened and closed at posted times.
- Support event setup and breakdown.
- Monitor and check the security of premises; maintain good order and discipline among patrons.
- Check sports equipment and resources in and out; complete inspections upon return; notify supervisor of damage or loss.
- Maintain inventory controls for proper accountability of program equipment and resources.
- Ensure athletic playing surfaces are properly maintained, safe, and ready for play.
- Clean and maintain equipment/facilities; perform general janitorial services to keep interior spaces clean and orderly (e.g., sweeping, mopping, dusting, cleaning workout areas, mirrors, bathrooms, locker areas; straightening equipment and accessories).
- Make minor repairs to facilities and equipment when appropriate; assist with outdoor maintenance.
- Report maintenance problems, material deficiencies, and unsafe conditions that cannot be repaired in-house.
Requirements
- Successful completion of a National Agency Background Check (NACI) is required.
- Availability to work special events, weekends, and holidays may be required.
- Work is performed both indoors and outdoors under varied weather conditions.
- Position requires considerable standing, bending, stooping, walking, pushing, reaching, climbing, and lifting objects up to 45 pounds unassisted.
- Completion of CPR, First Aid, and AED training is required within 90 days of appointment.
- This position may serve as the "opener" and may be required to work as early as 03:30 AM.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of the goals, principles, techniques, and procedures used in organizing, planning, and conducting basic fitness, aquatics, and sports activities.
- Knowledge of safe use and operation of fitness equipment, facility operations, and basic fitness equipment maintenance/repair.
- Knowledge of MWR policies, rules, and regulations related to the assigned work area.
- Knowledge of basic arithmetic to compute charges, disperse change accurately, and prepare reports.
- Skill and ability to provide fitness, aquatics, and sports training or orientation.
- Skill in the use of Microsoft Office programs (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and others as they relate to fitness, sports, and aquatics programming.
- Skill in providing excellent customer service obtained through prior experience and training.
- Ability to competently and independently carry out day-to-day recreation operations.
- Ability to develop and effectively deliver presentations and/or training.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
