Recreation Aide - Youth (Camp Carson)
About the role
During the Camp Carson Summer Day Camp program, we provide structured activities to our youth. Recreation Aides will assist Recreation Leads in various ways and ensure children's safety.
Responsibilities
- Create a fun and safe environment for children aged 5-13.
- Prepare and set up needed supplies for activities.
- Carry out plans for activities.
- Treat participants appropriately and properly.
- Use positive monitoring techniques.
- Maintain daily attendance records for each participant.
- Contact parents according to established protocols.
- Maintain an organized and orderly work atmosphere.
- React immediately, calmly, and effectively to situations.
- Perform cleaning duties as assigned.
- Perform related duties as assigned by Recreation Aide Lead or Recreation Aide Supervisor.
- Perform all duties in a safe manner.
Requirements
- Must be at least fifteen (15) years of age at date of hire, and have either paid or volunteer experience working with children between 5 and 13 years of age AND be willing to participate in water activities and be in water up to four (4) feet deep; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.
- Must obtain CPR/AED/First Aid Certification within six (6) months of hire.
- Campus Extension certificates (Mandated Reporting: Recognizing Child Abuse and Neglect) within one (1) month of hire.
- Nevada Act Early certificates within one (1) month of hire.
- Pool Pact certificates within one (1) month of hire.
- Pro Solutions certificates within one (1) month of hire.
Qualifications
- Education and Experience: Must have either paid or volunteer experience working with children between 5 and 13 years of age AND be willing to participate in water activities and be in water up to four (4) feet deep; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.
- Knowledge: Safe work practices. Specific area of employment (working with children/basketball/volleyball, etc.).
- Skills: Assist in organizing and implementing activities for the program participants. React immediately, calmly, and effectively to situations and employ established techniques to resolve issues. Enforce policies and procedures. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, with both children and adults. Maintain current certifications. Drive a City vehicle if 18 years of age or older.
Benefits
This is a non-exempt, part-time position, not to exceed 1039 work hours in a fiscal year, in which the employee performs a variety of routine tasks in support of the Carson City Youth Programs.
Schedule
The hours for the Camp Carson Summer Day Camp Program are from 7:00a.m. - 6:00p.m. Camp Carson shifts can range from 2-8 hours a day for 4-5 days out of the week depending on staff availability. Some staff may be asked to be on call and work anywhere from 1-5 days out of the week.
The hours for the Capital Kids Before & After School Program are from 6:30a.m. - 8:00a.m and 3:15p.m. - 6:00p.m. Capital Kids shift can range from 1-4 hours a day for 5 days out of the week depending on staff availability. Some staff may be asked to be on call and work anywhere from 1-5 days out of the week.
Pay
Part-time employees are limited to working no more than 1,039 hours in any fiscal year, July 1 through June 30. Part-time employees are not eligible to receive paid leave (including pay for not working on holidays), PERS retirement, or medical/dental/vision/life insurance. Nevada does not have a state income tax. Part-time employees do not contribute to social security; however, they must contribute 7.5% of their gross pay into a FICA Alternative Plan and are also responsible for paying the 1.45% Medicare tax. Part-time employees are covered under the City’s worker’s compensation program.
Conditions of Employment
- Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.
- New employees are required to submit to a fingerprint based background investigation (if 18 years of age or older) which costs the new employee $47.00 and a drug screening which costs $36.50.
- Employment is contingent upon passing the background and the drug screening.
- This position is required to make a report in accordance with Nevada Revised Statute 432B.220, if, in his or her professional or occupational capacity, he or she knows or has reasonable cause to believe that a child has been abused or neglected.
- Carson City participates in E-Verify and will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), with information from each applicants Form I-9 to confirm work authorization.

- If hired for the position of Recreation Aide, you must successfully participate in mandatory, paid staff training from June 8 - June 12, 2026. The mandatory training includes Mandated Reporting, CPR/AED/First Aid, and more.

- Do you participate in any extracurricular activities that may help you relate to children? (i.e., theater or performing acts, dance, martial arts, sports, additional languages, etc.). If so, provide a description of the extracurricular activities you participate in.
- Are you available to work between February - June to complete online training and be assigned shifts to the Capital Kids After School Program? Hours for the program are from 3:15pm - 6:00pm.
