About the role
Facilitates youth recreational activities by supervising, participating, or teaching in programs such as intramural sports, community retreats, and open recreation time. Supports Boys Town High School home athletic events and ensures the safety and security of the Field House facility and its occupants.
Responsibilities
- Attend scheduled program hours and engage in direct interaction and supervision with youth, Boys Town employees, guests, and visitors.
- Assist in building a positive community and relationships with Boys Town youth through recreational programs.
- Maintain the Field House as a safe and secure facility by monitoring youth, keeping accurate attendance records, securing areas, and identifying safety risks.
- Support Boys Town High School home athletic events (Football, Wrestling, Cross Country, Soccer, Basketball, Volleyball, Track) by taking tickets, operating the clock/scoreboard, monitoring crowds, and hosting visitors.
- Coordinate with supervisors and co-workers to set up equipment for programs.
- Use the Boys Town Model to teach and monitor behaviors and skills during recreational activities.
- Act as a lifeguard if certified, ensuring water safety and pool procedures (certification provided by Boys Town).
- Ensure safety and security of youth during the school day and practice times, including monitoring their whereabouts.
- Monitor Field House doors during school hours to ensure authorized and safe entry.
- Assist office staff and teachers in verifying student attendance and whereabouts within the Field House.
- Provide support to teachers during the school day, including supervising referred youth or those waiting for pickup.
- Provide directions and access for deliveries and visitors to the Field House.
- Lock down the Field House during emergencies, fire drills, or inclement weather, and communicate student locations to administration.
- Conduct sweeps after fire drills as instructed by administration.
- Serve as a role model by demonstrating behaviors that reflect the values and principles of the Boys Town mission.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of 19 years of age.
- CPR, First Aid, and AED certification required within 60 days of hire (provided by Boys Town).
- Lifeguard certification required for some positions (provided by Boys Town).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in recreational, athletic, or youth-focused roles.
Skills
- Knowledge of recreational activities, equipment, and safe practices.
- Ability to communicate professionally and adapt responses to situations while maintaining procedural integrity.
- Ability to build disciplined and positive relationships with youth and professional relationships with coworkers.
Physical Requirements
- Must maintain sufficient mental acuity and physical strength, agility, and endurance to perform job requirements, including handling stressful situations.
- Must have adequate vision, hearing, speech, and mobility to monitor youth, participate in safety procedures, and engage in physical activities.
- Ability to push/pull at least 80 pounds of force, lift up to 50 pounds, carry up to 40 pounds safely, and perform overhead reaching, bending, and squatting.
Work Environment
- Work is primarily performed in educational, administrative, gymnasium, pool (including exposure to chemicals), or outdoor environments.
- May be subject to varying conditions, including outside weather, and occasional high-stress or potentially aggressive situations.
- Involves constant interruptions, inappropriate behaviors, and potential verbal or physical threats from youth.
