Recovery Advocate
Duties And Responsibilities
- Support the admission, transfer, and discharge process for the patient.
- Conduct on person searches and document patient belongings.
- Facilitate new patient orientation and unit tours.
- Organize patient movement.
- Help organize patients for off-campus appointments as required.
- Accompany and/or monitor patients for scheduled programming.
- Ensure patient attendance to scheduled programming.
- Accompany patients to meals and activities.
- Assist with guest speakers and in-house recovery support meetings.
- Monitor and direct patients during emergency evacuations.
- Aid the clinical and admission teams in monitoring and assessing patient behavior.
- Implement elopement, AMA, and ASA protocols.
- Maintain communication with clinical staff regarding patient issues.
- Document patient behavior in electronic medical record.
- De-escalate patients.
- Perform daily room/perimeter checks and periodic room searches.
- Educate patients on recovery-oriented stress management, social, relational, and coping skills.
- Conduct the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) when indicated.
- Follow protocol for patients returning from off-site passes.
- May present educational lectures with clinically approved materials.
- Maintain common areas clean, neat, safe, and presentable.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to walk and actively participate in activities throughout campus, which may include ascending and descending stairs.
- Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time as needed.
- Must be able to drive a 15-passenger van, car, or car to and from various activities.
- Must be able to work overtime/extended hours, holidays, and during periods of inclement weather as needed.
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Requires proficient computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Requires a basic understanding of substance use disorders and recovery program philosophies.
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- Requires a current, valid, unrestricted driver’s license with at least 5 years of driving experience.
- Experience working with respective populations is preferred.
- If in recovery, 2 years of continuous sobriety is preferred.
- This is a safety sensitive position.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of the principles and philosophies of recovery programs (i.e. 12 Steps, Dharma Recovery, SMART Recovery, etc.).
- Must possess the skills to adequately supervise respective population and be able to observe, report, and document behaviors on the unit.
- Must be able to operate as a role model in decorum, speech, and behaviors consistent with recovery principles.
- Must demonstrate good organizational skills.
- Must possess the skills necessary to present clinically approved educational lectures.
- Must possess cultural sensitivity and act appropriately within all cultures.
- Must be computer literate and able to work with most Microsoft applications along with other network components.
- Must be able to keep all clinical work within the guidelines of the federal and state guidelines and Caron policy regarding ethical standards.
