Responsibilities
Your responsibility centers on the academic component: delivering small-group structured literacy instruction that advances every K-2 student in phonics, decoding, fluency, and writing.
- Delivering small-group structured literacy instruction: systematic phonics, decoding, fluency, and foundational writing for all K-2 students, not limited to those identified for intervention
- Interpreting student performance data from adaptive platforms and running records to reconfigure groups and modify instruction between sessions
- Providing one-on-one and small-group coaching through adaptive learning software, establishing relationships that support goal attainment
- Creating original lesson sequences grounded in structured literacy methodology, customized to each group's present skill level and learning velocity
- Integrating selective outdoor or experiential components to strengthen literacy concepts when such methods meaningfully improve comprehension
What You Won’t Be Doing
- Developing IEPs or managing pull-out intervention schedules with general education teachers. All students are within your instructional scope.
- Serving as passive monitor while students use learning applications. You actively guide them toward goal completion, not observe screen interaction.
- Conducting instruction within a conventional classroom structure all day. Students engage in outdoor activities during afternoons, making your literacy instruction periods concentrated and intensive.
- Evaluating large volumes of worksheets — adaptive software manages practice frequency and progress documentation, allowing you to concentrate on live instruction.
Reading Specialist Key Responsibilities
- Drive measurable reading and writing advancement across all K-2 students using structured literacy methodology and adaptive learning technology.
Basic Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in any discipline
- Master's degree in reading instruction OR structured literacy certification including Orton-Gillingham, Wilson Reading System, IMSE, CERI, LETRS, Neuhaus, or UFLI. This credential is mandatory, not preferred.
- Minimum 2 years of full-time K-2 structured reading instruction employing systematic phonics in school or clinical environments, completed within the past 5 years
- Demonstrated experience creating original reading lessons, with ability to articulate instructional content and methodology independent of commercial programs
- Available to work on-site at Waypoint Academy, Dripping Springs (Austin area), TX
- Prepared to instruct all K-2 students (not exclusively struggling readers) and integrate AI-driven adaptive learning platforms into daily instruction
- Authorized to work in the United States without requiring visa sponsorship
Nice-to-Have Requirements
- Proficiency across multiple structured literacy frameworks (such as Orton-Gillingham and UFLI) with articulated reasoning for selecting each approach in specific contexts
- Documented reading gains across complete student cohorts, beyond intervention-only caseloads. You can specify the assessment instruments and quantitative results.
- Working knowledge of adaptive reading platforms (Lexia, Amira, Reading Eggs, or comparable systems) and leveraging their analytics to inform instructional adjustments
- Background in alternative educational settings: micro-schools, outdoor education initiatives, Montessori environments, or comparable models
